I have wanted to Purchase a model 41 for 30 years. Saturday at a gun auction I picked up a new S&w 41 with wood case and two magazines for $1200. How did I do?

Depending on condition, but any mod 41 pistol under $1600 bux is a winner as far as I'm concerned.

Depends entirely on the local market. Some places, these pistols fetch outlandish prices. Around here, a decent used example is about a grand. And you can find plenty online for less than a thousand.

I am not sure if you mean factory New - or "New to you" - (used). I'll assume you mean a used version as it was an auction - but please let us know and show us a few pic's. :)

For a factory new gun the list price is currently $1369.00 and can be gotten for around $1200 bucks. If you are talking a used M41 then they are available between $900 - $1300 (at least in LGS's near me) and the more expensive ones are usually the ones in better condition and come with the original accoutrements. On-line it's "catch as catch can"!

In my personal opinion the older ones are much better quality and are more traditional in fit & finish. While some don't want the hassle of buying a used gun and opt to buy new, they still seem to be happy with their purchase. I suppose they are not sticklers for finish, genuine Walnut, traditional Bluing etc. and like the lifetime warranty the new ones come with.

Either way, the M41 is a great Target Pistol and will outshoot most shooters. I've owned mine since 1979. Good luck with it!

PS: I have seen some beautiful vintage M41's at very expensive prices of over $1,400.00 and some won't blink an eye for paying that for a "Factory complete" example. Down the road and after inflation it probably won't matter to much, however it is my opinion that if you look hard and serious there is no need to pay that much for a beautiful gun. One of my fellow Club Members just purchased a pristine vintage M41 with the Cocking Indicator too, for $800 bucks. This was a private sale and did not come with anything but the gun itself, however it is drop - dead 100% gorgeous! They are still out there and ready for the plucking!

Sixpointfive, that price for a new 41 is a good deal. Many dealers ask more - and get it. If by chance it's the Performance Center Model, then you did more than good, you did great.

Regardless, after waiting 30 years, it doesn't matter how you did. You satisfied an itch you had, and given proper care, the gun should maintain it's value as time goes by and inflation either raises new prices or S&W foolishly discontinues the line. ;)

You will have many good years shooting this gun. You waited long enough and it sounds like you got a real good one. If you are Happy with this purchase then thats all that matters. A nice wooden box for it is a bonus also. WE would love to see pics of this gun Please. Box and all.

Does S&W recommend standard or high velocity for their model 41's

CCI-SV is the only ammo we actually recommend for this gun. Do not use the high velocity stuff as all you do is beat the gun up with it. The SV ammo is the best food you can feed it period.

Not really. CCI SV is just the go-to for most guys. It's decent and easily-available, and you can still buy it for (very slightly) less than it costs to reload 9mm or .38 Spl--about $400/case.

If you want to pay more, there are a lot of more expensive brands, some eclipsing the $600/case mark, that are undoubtedly better than CCI Standard. But realistically, most people don't see the need for it.

So sixpointfive....
Your first post was almost a week ago.
What's happening with your 41 now? Have you tried her out??

I bought a 41 over a year ago (built in 1980) and have shot many rounds through it. It certainly is a joy to shoot.... they are hard to find here in the Netherlands.

Do you know when yours was made? I found these listings of serial numbers... maybe you can find yours on one of them?

I picked up a 1986 model 41 with a 5.5" un-drilled barrel about a month ago for just under $900 on this forum. A week ago I was at my LGS and they had a new 7" drilled & tapped barrel that they said had been sitting in their safe for about 15 years. It was a special order that was never picked up. It is now mine for for $275. The gun runs like a top with both barrels, but I really like the 7" better than the 5.5.

I also like the longer barrel on mine as well. Its a 7-3/8" older one but is balanced perfectly for me. The CCI-SV ammo works best in our M41's and M46's as well. There is NO reason to spend more on good ammo as this works great as it is.
