I wanted a Smith and Wesson 41 for quite awhile now, I have read so many rave reviews about them; however they are very expensive here, $ 1000.- and up for a secondhand one and $ 2000 for a new one. I have several other 22s so I just waited for the day when a good deal would come my way. And as you guessed it that day has come.

This baby popped up at the LGS for $ 550.- and since I’ve been a good customer lately I got it for $ 495.-. I still have to go and pick it up but here are the pics from the LGS.

Almost looks like a Millett rear sight. I find that odd on a later built 41.

Or did S&W change the rear sight later in production?

The newer models have a similar sight but the side is flat and engraved "smith & wesson"

That is def aftermarket but what a steal at under $500. I'm envious.
 
I'm glad you bought it at a legitimate LGS. If I bought one from an individual that cheap I would be afraid it was stolen or I was taking advantage of somebody in dire financial straits. Enjoy that beautiful M-41, all the better because you got a better than good deal.
 
The Millett rear sight on the Model 41 is not aftermarket. S&W used these sights for a short period of time in the mid 90's.
 
Good for you. An excellent score. How many mags came with it? Enjoy.....
 
You "STOLE" that sucker!!! The others (pictured) are great as well! Use it well - BTW I question just how much the LGS you bought it from knows about pricing M41's - to your advantage of course! :D

Yes, I was shocked too, and almost felt bad about asking a “good customer” discount
 
I bought mine new (5.5" Bull bbl.) in 1980 I believe and paid around $500 with tax. 3 years ago I purchased a brand new "Sporter /Field barrel" in the original packaging and paid about $500 as well. Some may think I was foolish to pay that for the barrel, but it was never even mounted in a gun and factory new from the late 1950's or 60's - which is my style! :D

As much as I know the $500 was a bit much for the bbl. after seeing how it shoots - I'd pay that again! :D

how it groups? after developing some arthritis I can not shoot any more >9mm. I put a new production 7'' on hold at my dealer and a little on the fence after reading much of the usual...old (1960s) good, >1990s no good (as we say in NJ). That is why I am curious how it feeds, how accurate it is and year of production.

I don’t know yet, I literally just got home. I will report when I have a chance to take it to the range.

824tsv was kind enough to inform me that it was produced in 1997ish
 
That is one beautiful M41!

Mine is also a 5 1/2" Heavy bbl and I bought it after just picking it up once, the way it balanced and felt in my hand was perfect, just like a 1911. The stars had lined up (Didn't hear trumpets though).

You are lucky in the sense that mine REALLY started to shine after the first time I ran SK Standard Plus through it and it's all it gets fed since then. But, being imported (Germany IIRC), it has gotted scarce and even more expensive. Should be more available and cheaper for you.

From experience, mine does NOT care for wax based lube, like CCI SV. It will gunk up in fairly short order and I just don't use it. It really prefers the 'greasy kid stuff' that SK uses.

What about the 2 magazines you have? Do they have the pre 90s metal followers, or the newer plastic followers? No problems with the followers per se, but the general materials and dimensions are iffy sometimes (thinner steel used, mags not fitting right for example). Imagine customer service telling you to squeeze a brand new magazine in a vise so it can be inserted! Some are perfect, some, much less so.

Let us know how it goes at the range!

Well, you'll know soon enough how they function.

I like at least 5 magazines so I can load up a full box before the range, if not more.

When I first started hearing about problems with the newer mags at RFC around the turn of the last century, I started searching/buying pre 1990 made magazines that were still plentiful and the same cost as new. Ended up with 14 and 4 still unopened. Figured I had enough.:eek:

On the "For use in" on the back, only the M422, M41 was listed on the pre 1990 mags. The post 1990 mags listed 4 different pistols in the "For use in" on the back of the blister pack.

They are really getting scarce now and prices reflect that. But, they are built like tanks and function perfectly.

Hope this helps some with the magazines and really hope yours are flawless.
