S&W 455 Mark II US,CA,Or Britt?

Ok. I have learned a lot, but info is tough to come by. I have decided that the one I am looking at is all original Canadian model as advertised with matching numbers.

The only problem I have is that the left side of the barrel just says Smith & Wesson. No 455 to follow. Seller can't give me a answer why. All that I have seen says 455 after Smith & Wesson. It is very nice and numbers match, but the lack of 455 stamped bothers me since many were 45 colt or 45 ACP. converted and I want the original 455 Wembley.

What is the SN, that might help a little. According to the Standard Catalog many of the 1st Model .455 Mark IIs (Triplelocks) did not have caliber markings. But you said this one is from 1915 so should be a second Model without ejector shroud. Theoretically should have the caliber stamp but maybe not. . . Posting pictures would likely answer many questions.

When you said it is Canadian, what leads you to that conclusion other than the seller stating so? Does "Canadian" mean it went direct to Canada and does not have British acceptance stamps? Can you describe the "gibberish" you mentioned previously on the left side of the frame. If it is along the knuckle below the hammer that sounds very much like the typical British acceptance stamps. If so, Canadian in the sense that it was shipped to Canada from the UK and used by Canadian forces?

As to the barrel, if not stamped with the caliber, does the SN on it match the rest of the SNs? You said they all match so presumably the barrel SN does match. If so, does the lack of a caliber stamp make any difference? Without pictures I don't think there is much else we can tell you.

Well I decided to wing it and told the seller I'll take it. It is a very interesting gun from World war 1. I'll let you know how it turns out.

Info is not that hard to come by if you read the posted info members have taken the time to share with you. The link to a thread supplied in post #2 above is all about your question of caliber markings. All you have to do is look at the first post of that thread.

Well after my research like I said I decided to take it. emailed the dealer/seller last night and said I 'ii take it. someone bought it on their online store after I went to bed. Been for sale 3 months and I lost it on the last night. LOL. What are the odds?
