It is Katy, I have heard that they have put them on a square butt, I don't have one myself.

The 500 has an N-Frame sized grip frame, the 686 is a K-Frame size, and there is a difference in the shape of frames above the frame back strap. I would think that there would be enough of a a gap between a K-frame frame and an N-Frame grip to make it too loose.

A square butt grip frame will not fit a round butt grip.

The pre 1996 686's were square (with some special runs in round butt), so the post 1996 686-4's round butt's would fit into the 500 grip opening, so the question would be whether or not there would be too much of a difference with the frame shape & size as I mentioned above where the 500's grip would be too oversized to work with a K-Frame very well.

Based upon someone else's report here I put the 500 grips on my round butt 686 and the fit is pretty darn good. I had to work them on a bit for the last few MM to get them fully seated before screwing down that bottom clamp/screw. There isn't any looseness in their fit now and I've put a couple thousand rounds through it since the install.

I doubt if they would be a drop-on fit for a square butt model. However, I also wouldn't be surprised if someone with a little ingenuity could make them fit by grinding out the far back corner of the butt slot to conform to the square grip frame. It might require making up a little tool (like a very small dremel sanding drum on a long shaft) that would chuck in a drill and then proceeding very slowly with a "grind a little and try" approach.

The 500 grips are made to fit K, L, N, and X round butt frames only. Although K/L grips normally do not fit N frames, these grips are designed to fit either. They are rubber Hogue monogrips that look a lot like standard monogrips, but they have more cushioning and slightly different finger groove size. My fingers don't fit the regular monogrips but I find the 500 grips very comfortable, and have them on a 686 and a 617. (Yes, they do a great job of absorbing that intense .22LR recoil!)

The "X" frame has the exact same size grip frame as the K/L frame according to Smith and Wesson. It's not on their sight, you have to call them and ask. FWIW

The biggest improvement for me is the extra covering on the backstrap. It's not really needed for the recoil (especially not in that high powered 22

) but it does add some extra "reach" to the trigger. Since I have long fingers that extra bit of length made the 686 a near-perfect fit.

I agree with you on the finger grooves. They seem to be spaced a bit further apart than the normal monogrips making it much more approriate for my finger spacing, as well.
