S&W 500 question

Here's a pic of the 6-1/2" PC model along with some of the other one's I own.

The 6-1/2" PC model is one of only 500 made. The 7-1/2" PC model is one of only 2000 made. The 8-3/8" model I bought when they first came out in 03'. The 10-1/2" model is one of only two that I know of and it still remains unfired. The bottom pic is my ES snubby beast.

WOW, that's quite the 500 collection. I LOVE that black 7.5" with the unfluted cylinder. When was that released?? Gorgeous gun.

I bought it in March 2005 shortly after it came out. They may have come out in 2004, not sure exactly. It's my favorite barrel length of all of them.

Any experience shooting the factory 6.5" half-lug?

I've never seen or even heard of someone selling a Ross 500. More often than not, people are buying in pairs. John posts here sometimes, you can contact him through his website to purchase.

I still have NIB guns available, both finishes.

Nope. I haven't had the opportunity to shoot one yet.

JR.
I've been following the S&W500 since it first came out and have done my fair share of experimenting with the cartridge including necking it down to .44 Cal. Most of what I've done was simply out of curiosity because I'm a "tinkerer".

I would just like to thank you personally for your efforts and contributions to this cartridge/gun.

What gun did you use to shoot the 44/500 mag experiment?

I bought the 6 1/2 inch half lug. Specifically because I prefer the same length in my N frames. the 500 feels just like a big 29. Just as I wanted.

I love my 4 inch 500! I had a 8 3/8th in 629 that I used to load som hot rounds, and my 500 feels better getting back on target quickly. If only they made speed loaders!

I chose the JRC 500, for the simple reasoning that I wanted a packable, big caliper handgun. These pistols are heavy. I have no experience with the 6&1/2' barreled guns and anything longer than 5" is too much for me. I also like the no comp feature on them and not sure the factory 4" guns(3"+1" comp) would be legal for hunting in my native Illinois?

My $.02, Steve

Sure seems like a lot of people hate compensators. lol.

I would think it'd be viewed as a good thing. So what if it shaves a little speed off of the round. You have to be able to comfortably shoot the gun (that's more important to me). I guess though if recoil just isn't a big deal for you - although I can't imagine it being a non-issue with this caliber - then I would understand.

I don't think recoil is the issue here? My reasoning was due to the increase in noise coming off the gun when fired. Yes, I wear muffs but, wouldn't pass up that buck of a lifetime if it presented itself, if no muffs were available.

I don't think I'm particularly recoil sensitive, I've had 5, 500 Mags but there is a considerable difference in perceived recoil between the 6.5" half lug and the original 8 3/8th in barrel.

I would assume that the JR Special would be harder kicking than the 6.5" half lug. Don

Steve,
I shoot a 4" (3" + 1" comp) and the difference in the noise with and without the comp. is undetedctable. They are both so loud I would not hunt with any 500 without sonic ear valves or the like. The main difference to me is recoil. W/O the comp, recovery time for follow up shots is awful. That to me is more important especially if I'm using it as a back up gun while bear hunting. People that have been in that situation report not even hearing the shots.

Again, the 4" is illegal to hunt with where I live. Suit yourself if your not a hunter, I understand but, who else besides hunters would want these guns? I mean at $65 for 20 rounds(some brands), they're not cheap to shoot.

Me. They are fun to own and let others shoot so they can say they shot the most powerful production handgun in the world. And it's the cheapest gun I own to shoot....few want to shoot it more than once!

Hmmmm... The same things were said about the first 44 Mags years ago, implying it was useless as an uncontrollable and over powered handgun caliber.

Contrary to popular belief, 44 Mag are at best marginal for larger game including large bull elk, moose or even a very large and POed black bear. I'm aware because I've hunted them for decades with handguns and that's why I switched to a 6.5 500 two years ago.

For the price of a few boxes of 500 ammo a person can buy all the necessary reloading equipment and components needed for the creation of very inexpensive 500 ammo.

If ya gotta ask why people want to buy anything unusual, like extremely large houses, Ferrari's, Lear Jets, Islands, etc, I guess the answer will always be simply because they want them and can afford them..... that's the way most people feel about the 500 and I believe it's as valid as any other.

JMHO

I don't think you understand, Steve. I'd guess that most owners of .500 Mags don't hunt, they just enjoy big bore revolvers. I'm one of them.

Who really cares about the ammo prices? If you're a serious shooter, you reload and that dramatically reduces the price of ammo. My ammo costs about $16/50 for quality, powerful reloads. Don

Hondo44, now that you mention it, I agree.
TDC, your words, not mine. I do reload but, these aren't cheap to reload for either? Calm down a little will ya?
