Hey guys thinking of trading my 4 inch 500 in at LGS tomorrow. It is just the way it left Smith factory less then a year ago. I put roughly 200 rounds through it. I know they gotta make money on it, I paid 1235.00 for it. What do you think? Thanks

A LGS has a used one for $800.00 is as new condition they can't get rid of! Put it on GB and "try" and sell it.

Yes, best to try to sell it outright rather than a trade, unless the shop is giving you a deep discount from retail on the gun you want to get. Figure 50-66% trade-in value from what you paid.

Every gunshop is a little different.

My LGS who get's the majority of my firearms purchasing business (and has been a well established mom and pop type business for 35 years) offered me $750 trade value on my 460v toward an old Winchester model 54 in VGC he had priced at $900. I thought it was a pretty good offer considering it's what he makes his living at. I passed on the trade, not because I thought his offer was unfair, but I couldn't bring myself to let go of my 460.

YMMV

Selling outright is always better than selling/trading to a LGS. It just requires a little more effort, but I feel it's well worth it.

In today's market anything between $800 - $900 for a used 500 is about as good as it gets - that's what I've seen in northern Nevada.

He tryed 550. I realize they need to make money . Soooo I traded it for a new glock 17 gen 5. And 100 worth of ammo. That's it

I'm not surprised at the offer. While I don't begrudge a shop owner making money, I also know that when they buy a new gun from a jobber, they don't make anywhere near the mark up they do on used guns. The other side of the coin is guns like yours are not a mainstream items, meaning he'll sell probably 50 to 100 Glock type guns (or more) before he sells one like yours. That's why selling on your own is a better alternative. Sites like this one, GB and Armslist reach far larger audiences, including those people who are specific looking for what you are selling.

As long as you are happy with the trade, that's all that matters though. :)

Ouch! Here in Texas on the private market we are lucky if we see a 500 or 460 for less than 1000 bucks. Lowest I ever saw was 850 and snapped up off our local gun board in an instant. If you got what you wanted that is all that matters.

For the price of a new gen 5 and 100 rounds I think many of us would have thrown in for your shipping costs plus an extra hundred and still come out way ahead.......I saw you are new to the forum but given time you would have seen how easy it is to buy and sell here.

You(or anyone) can buy a new S&W 500 4" from Buds brand new for $1150. A used gun in excellent condition can bring 80% of new at retail. 1150x.80=920.

That is what the dealer can get top end retail. 920/1.54(35% margin) = an offer to the guy selling his gun of ~$600. An offer of $550 allows the dealer to mark the gun at $899 or $949 and it allows him to take up to $100 off the price of the $949 marked price and still make his margin.

In a nut shell, that's how it work. He traded for your gun and a Gen 5 G17. Dealer cost on a G17Gen5 is $492. + $100 worth of ammo that cost him $60 He traded you $550 worth of stuff. :)
