I just bought a S&W product code 103498 yesterday. I've never seen a 586 in 38 special. The gun was made in Brazil and has a 4.25" barrel. Can anyone help me some values on this revolver? It is as new in box condition.

Thanks,
Jason

Does that make the gun more valuable than a standard 586?

I wouldnt say it adds value, nor does it detract from its value. They are "different" not better or worse. Personally, i have seen these for sale and skipped them because the only reason for me to have an L frame is to shoot hot magnums. I suppose if one were competing and wanted to shoot a lot of volume of .38s, they could use this. I do like the round butt and round butt targets. Those fetch a premium for sure. The box helps too.

Nice round butt and factory target grips..........plum cylinder.................post 95

Value.... worth more?........to most Folks no..... just a big heavy .38 when folks want a .357....so to most it's worth less than a .357, 586

Given you've got the box and everything...... pre-lock and MIM and internal hammer....... box and Docs?

Probably a wash....... to the right collector................... pretty small market.

At a local gun shop....... around here...... maybe a $400 gun....... would be viewed as a very slow mover.

Around here; a $250 gun on trade..... $400 sticker price.......

from a good customer $400 OTD

Sorry don't think that was what you wanted to hear......Like Squidsix I've seen several L-frame ,38s over the years in LGS....

Customers exhibit excitement over a 4" L-frame marked around $400 .......excitement fades when they see it's a .38!!!!!

TR's $600? maybe, to the right collector who would be found around here if anywhere!!!!!!!

The spec ord dates it to 1997. It looks like pre mim hammer mounted firing pin. Those rb target stocks have some value the fact that it's 38 not 357 to me narrows the amount of prospective buyers. To someone that wants something different & you have the box my opinion of value would be $600 as the lowest offer to accept.

That is an interesting variant and I agree with the other comments. Interesting, yes, increasing value only to the right collector looking for the variant to round out a collection. Even then, they are going to realize that there is a narrow market. I have bought quite a few 357's and the appeal is their dual use utility. Test the market as mentioned above and it will tell you the value or just shoot it and enjoy it. They are great guns. Accurate and durable. Good luck to you whatever you choose.

Thank you all for the replies. I have several other 586's and 686's. I jumped on this one because I've never seen it before. I have no intent on shooting it, because of condition. I don't know that's it's ever been shot. My thought was, being in original box with all paperwork, it could be worth something, if not now, maybe someday. Thanks again

sjbelangia: These are mentioned in the SCSW 4th Edition - I know because I supplied much of the info to Supica & Nahas (and am acknowledged under the S&W Forum contributors in the front of the book).

These present some strange anomalies, like a MIM trigger in a -4 gun. The fact that these were -4's (CCE prefix serial numbers) but were shipped in 1997, while the -5 Brazil contract guns (BPY prefix serial numbers) were shipped in 1993. The -5's are thought to be production overruns. Not sure on the -4's. I've seen it speculated that they are part of a canceled contract.

Yours appears to have been shot based on the very visible turn line (in your photo), plus the fact that the grips are not original to the gun. These came with S&W embossed Hogue rubber monogrips.

I got interested in these as I acquired one about 6 or 7 years ago. I arrived at the same conclusions as most of the posters in this thread. Rarity or oddity does not always translate into value. I got mine for $500 - which was half of what the seller originally wanted. There was no box, docs or tools with mine which made collectibility even less. But it was the perfect gun for IDPA Revolver SSR Division (now subdivision).

Mine has had the action smoothed out; main and rebound springs changed; charge holes chamfered; rear sight changed to a black LPA target sight; front sight and integral base milled off and rib rebated to accept Weigand base for interchangeable blades (Weigand no longer makes the bases, but Bowen does) and a Dawson .100" FO blade inserted into the new base. Hogue Tamer grips are used. Probably have >5K rounds through it and it has been trouble free. Here's a pic...
