Both are great revolvers, if you plan on shooting a lot of 125 gr. ammo, get the L frame 586, it will hold up better.Getting both would be outstanding, the 19 is pinned and recessed, and would make a fine companion, for the 586.

I have 2 19-3's, the 4" is my head of the bed and travel gun. I carry one of my 27's on the farm or woods walking. If I had a 586 it would do both very well. I carried a 4" Python for years. The 586 is the same size, perfect....... I have more trouble finding used 586's than 19's. Go for the 586, you'll be happy.

The guns will have a different feel, you need to handle both of them and determine which feels better. The Mod 19 has the half lug barrel while the 586 has the full lug making the balance point different. The 586 is made to handle hotter .357 loads.
Check them both out, you can't make a wrong decision, both are great shooting guns.

:) Like some of the other post say I would handle the guns first and get the feel of them. Also you want to consider their condition. Don

+1 on what he said.

Both are fine guns. You did not mention their intended use. If you plan to shooot full power loads the 586-0 was subject to a recall relative to the firing pin bushing. I have used my 586-0 with 38 Specialloads for years without envountering any problems. The full lugged barrel of the 586 will make the gun more nose heavy than the 19.

I would pick depending on my intended use. If I planned on carrying it a lot, I would probably pick the 19; the light weight would be an asset. If it is going to be shot a lot rather than carried (a range gun), I would probably choose the 586; the extra weight would be an asset. You have carried a Python before, and now carry a 27 a lot, so it is likely the weight of the L frame gun won't be bothersome on your belt.

I would likely, though, wait until I could handle both guns and pick the one with the better trigger pulls, condition being equal.

A local club member bought a used 586 this week for $450 that looked to be in nice shape. I was back in the shop to buy it and he beat me to it, thank goodness. I have 7 wheel guns now, I think I should leave some for others to buy.

There not 4" but for accuracy and strength you can't beat them

Thanks for all the replys I went with the 586 and had a hard time choosing after looking at the revolvers I am gonna try and shoot tomorow

Good choice!

I own both a Model 19 and a 686, the stainless version of your new acquisition.

My "19" is my nightstand gun, and the 686 is my "go to gun" for lots of range work. I most likely put a couple of thousand rounds a year through the 686, and perhaps a couple of hundred through the Model 19.

Congrats. I seldom see a used 586 out this way, but the stainless version is plentiful.

Hi,
You made a good decision on the 586. But I would save a little money and find a model 19. The model 19 too me is the finest handling revolver S&W ever made. I have a model 13, 19 and 66. That tells you my favorite revolver.
