This looks like a 3" Classic Hunter. It does not appear to be mag-na-ported. The fact that is has the newer thumbpiece and the older hammer would indicate a 1997 production. I am not sure whether the Classic Hunters were manufactured thru 1997, but it does not match up with any of the Lew Horton guns of which I am aware. It is not a Peformance Center gun. The condition appears to show a fair amount of wear. The price of $750 is not out of line, but I don't think it's a super bargain either. Wish I could be more helpful.
I did have a Lew horton 3" before in the box but was not ported either. Did have fluted cylinder. Had very similar grips as well. Maybe the same grips???
I believe it's a Classic Carry, circa 1998-9... I have a LH Classic Carry, 629-5, 3", same grips, they are factory. $750 is a good price if condition warrants. Buy it before someone else does, I would.
Sorta/kinda. The factory would often continue runs of special orders like Lew Horton's. The Altamont grips pictured on your photo have been used by S&W on several 44mags, so they're not a sure sign of a Horton gun.
I'd say, if you like the gun, buy it. If is or isn't from Lew Horton really won't have much effect on value, imho. If it was an edition only done by Horton it might be a different story, but in this case not so much.
if you look above you will see where i mentioned that S&W distributed them and they were called combat magnums...horton was only a distributor...same as many others
Called Lew Horton and was built in 1998. 1 of 1500. Real happy now. Any idea on value now? I would think it would be higher being a Horton distributed gun.
