Why do smitty owners refer to the frame lock as a hillary hole? S&w added this "feature" in 2000ish with Safety hammers acquisition of the business and that idiot had nothing to do with it.
She did indeed.
During the Clinton Administration, Smith signed an agreement with the DOJ (I think). Smith was under British owners at the time, we all know what Brits think about gun ownership.
Part of the agreement was Smith would require their stocking dealers to place ALL Smith handguns in the shop's safe(s) at the close of business EVERY SINGLE DAY. Yes, this included the big box stores like Academy Sports, Bass Pro, etc. Some large store might have over a 100 guns on display, maybe more.
The agreement also stipulated that mfgrs would work in good faith toward developing a pistol that only-the-owner-can-fire. Some of the suggestions (all worthless, of course) were fingerprint ID, a magic decoding ring or other garbage. Of course, cops were exempt from such foolishness as was the Secret Service. Imagine that.
S/N's or ID of some sort was proposed for firing pins, each one being unique. Of course, no one mentioned using a tiny file on the firing pin to remove said ID or simply changing the firing pin altogether. They weren't going to let common sense enter their idea of "safe guns".
S&W was the only major mfgr to sign this agreement. While not as bad as the Bud Light boycott, sales took a huge hit. Some said 50%, some said more. Who knows for sure now?
But Hillary & Butch Reno (who was both Hillary's personal choice for AG & also the force behind Waco) were the driving force on this movement. Obviously, the media trumpeted it as the second coming "to make the streets safer" or some such garbage.
This garbage cost Bill Clinton control of the House, something he later admitted on record. (He also admitted to being an NRA Life Member, but that's another story.)
So when the Smiths began to hit the shops with the ugly hole in the sideplate, someone immediately labeled them "the Hillary Hole". Draw your own jokes from there.
I don't recall the timeframe, but the Brits sold S&W well below market price. I don't know if they thought they'd lose it all, or the Brits thought guns were icky or there were not many bidders or what. But it wasn't much better than pennies on the dollar. The guy who owned the Saf-T Lock company bought them. Don't recall his name, but he obviously thought he'd be both a hero to the American public for making a "safe" gun and get rich at the same time.
Problem was, none of those systems worked worth a darn. Fingerprints wouldn't do, as people wore gloves in cold weather and/or could have dirt or grease or whatever on their finger tips, ruining the sensor from working. Not a good scene in a self-defense situation, obviously.
The decoder ring didn't work as it relied on a sort of bluetooth thing for it to work. Bad batteries, weak batteries, faulty circuit board, all sorts of problems came up during R&D, I read. It quietly died a slow death, IMO.
But Hillary was indeed the driving force behind that fiasco, along with her AG. It gave the Republicans control of the House & made Newt Gringrich Speaker.
I don't know what happened to the Saf-T Lock guy, if he still owns his stock or sold it all or what.
I can't recall when the guy invented the lock delete kits. I hope he's making a small fortune though. Good for him!
Technically, the Smith agreement is still in effect, it's just both ignored & not enforced. It'd be impossible to enforce it, IMO.
Remember the LA Bank shoot-out? The thugs used illegally converted AKs to full-auto. Tiny little problem though. The AK S/Ns on their guns showed they came into the US AFTER Bill Clinton signed an executive order banning guns & ammo being imported from China.
So how did they get imported? Seems the Chinese importer made a rather substantial contribution to the DNC AND he got an import waiver from the Clintons. Of course, the media covered this up & buried it quickly. The importer went back to China, never to be seen again in the US. Imagine that.
These events are as accurate as I can remember them. If I'm wrong anywhere on them, please feel free to say so. But the Hillary Hole is indeed accurate.
