S&W 649-5 Bodyguard

I bought a S&W 649-5 Bodyguard in 2007. It's SS, has a lock, - it's a .357mag/.38 spec +P.
Can anybody tell me what S&W is doing co-opting the "Bodyguard" name, by saying .38 Bodyguard?

I love this gun, but maybe it's going out of production?

I'm not sure what you mean by "co-opting". They've been using the name associated with this series for many years, and I doubt very much that it is about to go out of production. I have one like yours, brand new, and it is better than the bodyguards have ever been...once I got rid of the internal lock, which liked to lock by itself during firing.

Do you mean using a name with several different models? That is confusing. It's getting out of control with all the "M&P" guns. To us older shooters, the only thing an M&P can be is a wonderful Model 10 revolver.

Yes, using the name with different models is what I meant - it is confusing. I haven't had any trouble with the internal lock, just unlocked it & forgot about it.

What's really confusing is calling a plastic Centennial type gun a Bodyguard.

Since they "invented" the term in relationship to handguns, I guess they can call anyone they want, anything they want.

I'm picking up a 649 no dash later this week as a matter of fact. Haven't owned one in awhile and I'm looking forward to it. Used to carry one in ankle holster as a bug for years. This one will be "the wifey's". But Im betting she lets me use it from time to time. I'll always be one who prefers carry weapons that have some heft but there are circumstances that make a J frame the perfect choice.

GREAT, GREAT guns and I like em much more than the Centenials. Never know when that single action shot may be an asset.

Old thread, but the last comment is relevant. It appears the model 649 .357mag is out of production. I'm wondering if this is permanent or temporary? I'm curious because just recently decided to start looking for one. I have a Model 49, ugly beauty, which I just love. I like it so much I've started looking into finding the model 649 in .357. Sorry if reviving this thread isn't appropriate.
