there is another thread here about the 64s shown on their website?

their website indicates the finish may be very worn, what is the condition of the guns from J&G?

why do they have bobbed hammers? is this the way they were shipped from S&W or is it a custom job?

does anyone know where these guns are from?

thanx,

I called J&G after seeing several of the pictures others had posted. The regular Mod. 64's appear to be in great condition. The vapor honed finished ones for the NYPD are the ones with the worn finish I believe.

If you decide to get one, talk to the guy at J&G for a few minutes. I found out that they have some that aren't listed on their website. They have square and round butt with a 2" barrel and bobbed hammer. They also have square butt with a 4" barrel and regular hammer with the spur. The guy was nice enough to take my name and number and go back into the stock to find a VG+ with the hammer spur for me. I hope I get it by the weekend!

$269 for the ones with the hammer spur. Not sure about the 2" barreled ones.

I posted this is another thread but here it is again.

These guns were a special order from NYPD, they are in DAO because that is what the PD required, they did this to help in legal actions, don't want cops running around with cocked revolvers and a hair trugger, that doesn't go over well in a NY court room!! I just bought one yesterday from a NY detective that carried this gun for 12+ years. When he retired he purchased the gun and now sold it to me along with the original Cobra Skin holster the gun was issued with, at least according to him. Mine has some very small nicks in the SS , this comes from a gun that has been carried a lot, but according to the PO the gun has less than 150 rounds through it. The lock up is good n tight. I would like some advice how to remove these small nicks. I am thinking about starting with some 600 gritt wet/dry sandpaper and go up from there.

Nice score NC. I'm surpized that detective let his duty weapon leave the family.

I'd personally leave the finish in the rough as it shows character. There have been numerous threads on removing nicks and scratches. Go to "Search" at the top and type in finish and see what comes up. I know one of our "experts" will be able to help you out.

The beauty of it is that it's YOUR revolver and you can do what you want with it! Enjoy!

J&G is very reputable. Please note, however, that not all of the bobbed 64s are NY-1s. The ones that are NY-1s are so marked and sold as such. Other 64s on their web site that are bobbed that are not marked and sold as NY-1s are NOT NYPD guns. They come from either other departments or a security company contract or something like that. The non-NY-1s are fairly easily distinguished by the way the hammers are bobbed.

Over the years I have purchased several 64s from them without a problem. Just becareful because they are currently selling newer models with IL and MIM parts. I purchased one by mistake recently.

The Cobra Skin holster was one of the correct duty issue holsters 1970-1992. NYPD technically did not issue the holster but gave you a uniform allowance and you purchased items from an authorized dealer. Every once in a while a NIB Cobra holster will sell on Gunbroker for $75 - $150. You might want to buy one of the new DeSantis holsters on ebay for the spur less NY-1 and keep the original as a collectable.

I would question the 150 round fired as possibly a little low. NYPD requires firing the gun qualification course on a regular schedule. Still the gun can fire 10k without issue any day.

i bought a S&W model 64-5 NY-1, in very good condition, from J&G sales in august

J&G did a great job of cleaning this revolver before shipping. the chambers, bore and forcing cone were bright and clean. it came with the original wood stocks and has a matte (dull) finish. the lockup and timing are excellant.

the exterior has some scratches and dings (small). these don't concern me. it's not a show piece or collector item. it's a shooter. well balanced and very accurate.

I would like to second the statement that J&G Sales are good guys to deal with. Usually they have rock-bottom prices to boot!

i agree, talked with Paulie 2-3 times on the phone. i finally settled on a S&W 64-4 snubbie.

i've had it about two weeks & i am very pleased. it's in excellent cond, shows minimal ware & i sorta love shooting it.

my only complaint is the DA trigger. it's too heavy.

shooting DA, i was all over the target, may have hit a couple of innocent bystanders.

SA, consistantly in the 10 ring with excellent grouping.

all in all, a very good experience with J&G & the 64-4.

got one other day,it was a 64-6,very good cond looks nice and locks up perfect, most not been shot much, dao but has nice trigger and pachmayr grippers on it,it is a round butt 4 inch barrel got it for 199 plus 22 shipping, i probaly get another one from them if they still got them ...mine was made nov 99i say for the price it is a good deal..while they last,,i thought i would not like the bobeb hammer,bt it works good..:)

I got a 64-3 from J&G with the spured hammer it cleaned up very good havent shot it yet but soon..

I received my 64-6 from J&G and am very pleased, even with the MIM trigger. The rubber grips were shot, but I didn't want them anyway. About two hours of TV and Mothers and the gun looks like it's nickel. It's a DAO and yes, the trigger is a bit heavy. I'd do it again! This one allegedly comes from BRINKS...the armored truck folks. :)

can the ones with the bobbed hammer be converted back to SA/DA by changing the hammer or has something else been done?

i'm not familar with Mother's. my 64-4 could use a little TLC.
where do you buy it?..gun shop?..grocery store? auto parts store? & what's it's whole name?
