S&W 681-1 Snub?

It appears to have a 2.5" model 686 barrel and associated parts, with an altered front sight. Cool conversion but with giant stocks.

I was checking in the 4th edition while Murphydog was typing. I totally agree with his assessment.

Why didn't smith make a 2.5 581/681 with a round butt? Back in the day I bet it would have been a big hit. By the way I love that.

3" models were made.
Had a 3" 586 back in the day which I foolishly traded..... but a 3" 66 was a lot easier to "carry (concealed) a lot and shoot a little".

I purchased a 681 with a 2 1/2 barrel locally. A Dayton police officer had his personally owned 4" duty revolver cut down. He sold it due to the department going to Glocks. It shot well but was too heavy for me to carry. I prefer the 66. Still have the 4" barrel somewhere. The 686 barrel is different from the 681 barrel.
Another one I saw was a 4" 681 that was round butted for off duty concealed carry.... but traded in for a 66 as "Too Heavy".
FWIW, I briefly entertained sending my NIB 681 to Magnaport to have them perform their magic, making it a 3" round butt. Having several 2.5" 686s I changed my mind and sold the 681.
That's pretty neat. If it were mine, I'd have the following work done:
Mill off that abomination of a front sight and dovetailed for a fiber optic
Round butt and boot grips
7-shot cylinder
Bobbed hammer or DAO
Mill out the barrel shroud for a longer ejector rod
Ball detent installed in the yoke
That would make for one badass little handful. Regulated for some Speer 135 gr +P, of course.

If the price was right I'd buy it for a project too.
I recall the mid-80's when the 2.5" 586's were available. They were a tough sell then. L@@K for them now,,,,. Old CS-1 3",, order all you could afford.
Finding an affordable 681 or 581 to modify??? Prices have risen to point that make modification too costly for most.
But, cost is always a relative thing to those paying the tab. The true Craftsmen of the trade will always be busy and that expertise does not come cheap. As it should be.

Unless it is an optical delusion, that barrel is heavily mis-clocked toward 11 o'clock. Am I seeing things?

What about adding a 7 shot cylinder and having it converted to 9 mm? Thoughts.
