Just picked up a nice S&W 681 that was sold to me as a model 686.
It looks like the factory overstamped the second 6 of the model number with a 1.
Has anybody seen one like this before?
The only thing that I can think of is that Smith must have stamped out a lot of 686s and then deceided to make some 681s and overstamped the second 6 with a 1.
The only difference between the two is the 681 comes with fixed sights
and the 686 as adj. sights.
Would really like to hear if anybody as a 681 that has the overstamp.

Thanks

Yes, I have had one just like the one you describe for the last 20 years. It was the first handgun I ever owned, and I still love it just as much today.

I have a 581 that is stamped 58-1. Yes, I do know the difference between a model 58 and a model 581, before you ask. Good luck to all.

I posted before. Here is the pic of mine.
