Are 686-3 snubbed rare or just hard to find? I would like another one for my collection but can't find. Thx for the help.

I would not classify them as rare but they are pretty scarce (talking about pre-locks of course in any dash configuration). Have plenty of money when you find one. Good luck.

Are they more uncommon in the wild than other no lock 2.5"? Im pretty sure most of the no lock 686 snubs I have seen were dash threes.

You mean like this one?

I think it is a dash 4 BICBW. It is hidden away presently at a friend's home but I'll see it again soon and double check.

I am not a fan of the early 686 snubbies. The first one I had just had the short, half length, ejector rod like what would be used on a 2 1/2 model 66

The newer 686 snubbies take advantage of the full length under-lug and use a full length extractor rod

Not sure why S&W could not make that happen from the start

I have seen one in the last 3 years. It was bubba'd bad. Lock work was messed with, had a bobbed hammer, barrel/cylinder gap was about 20 thousandths. I feel real bad for whoever bought that one.

Can't seem to be able to post pics, but this one I have is tight and beautiful. I'd like another one.

That one should be a dash 5 judging from the new style frame with integrated lug and no lock. Dash 4 was the last 686 on the old style frame with pressed in lug and hammer-mounted firing pin. And dash 6 have the lock.

When it rains it pours. Last year I picked up 3 2.5 inchers in as many months.
Seems I come across -3s more than the others. The -4 plus was a bonus. Didn't realize what I had until I got it home from the show. Took a moment to figure out why it had 7 holes.

No dash Lew Horton (sans M stamp)
-3
-4 plus
