I've been offered (to purchase) a 686 with "three inch barrel." I'm aware of the recall on some of these, but my research has not found any manufactured with a three inch barrel. Four inch, and 2 1/2 inch, yes. Before I check it out, I'd appreciate any info or advice. Thanks Steve in CO

Any 3" 686 at a good price is well worth it. The only recall that comes to mind is the firing pin bushing on no-dash and -1 models pryer to 1986 manufacture. It isn't a big deal and if the gun has been recalled it'll have a "M" stamped inside the yoke. There is a current production 3" that will have the lock in it, any earlier 3" 686 would bring a preminum price.

Why would a recall stop you from buying? S&W will fix anything on their dime including shipping. I have had a few recalled and even drive a Toyota!!

Thanks to handgunner356 for the info. I'm not concerned about the recall, I've had good warranty work done by S&W before on my .45 ACP Mountain Gun (burr in cylinder wall, causing FTE empty case.) But if I have the hassle of sending it back and forth (and thereby having paper on it), I may use that to try to talk him down from his $400 asking price.

I've got a 586 L-Comp from the Performance Center and it's one of the best shooters I have.

Check to see if the yoke is stamped with a 'CS-1'.

This was a limited edition made in 1988 for the Customs Service.
It has a round butt, 3 inch barrel and a darker brushed finish... It's also made to tighter tolerances than usual.
My understanding is that 3000 were made, and Janet Reno had 1,500 of these destroyed.

Hey... it could be your lucky day. If so, don't argue too much about the price. ;-)
