Why don't you just send it to S&W and replace the barrel. That wouldn't void the warranty.

686

I was reading a gun magazine that said the 686 is in the J frame family. Before I reply to that can anyone confirm or deny that?

J frame model 60

Can anyone tell me what the what the caricatures near the model number mean?

A 686 is an L frame.

You can have a barrel shortened but the factory will probably still recommend swapping it for a current 3" version, which is still made. The barrel stampings will be different from a 686-3 but it will fit and work well, and you can keep the original barrel in case you change your mind. Good luck in your decision.

Finding a 3" 686 barrel is next to impossible. I looked for the longest time and never found one. I bought a 6" and had it cut down along with sending it to S&W to have a new cylinder fitted (poor purchase sent directly to FFL). I have put about 500 rounds through and couldn't be happier. I also round butted it myself.

Most of the ones I have seen the front end of the barrel does not look right. If it were me I would bite the bullet and buy a 3 inch Smith with the lock hole. I have one. Also if you have to use it in a defensive situation ask the perp if he was shot with a pre lock or not. Bet he would not know for sure.
