Greeting Fellow Forum Members,

I'm brand new and this is my first post.

I owned several S&W 9mm autos way back when like the 469, 59, 559, and 59 nickle. I loved them all.

I just got a nice used 6904 and to me it seems like gen 3 of the first ASP like smiths 469? Am I right here?

I am wondering if there is this same gun by another model number in .40 cal?

Also is there a book that lists and depicts all of the S&W auto pistols out there that I could buy that would give me all the models and calibers etc?

Welcome to the forum!

You might look at the 4053TSW, which is double action only, or the 4013TSW, which is double action/single action. Here's my 4013TSW, which should look a lot like your 6904:

I don't know of any books to recommend (someone else will probably chime in here) but here is the magic decoder ring information for the third gens:

FIRST TWO DIGITS
39: 9mm
59: 9mm
69: 9mm double stack compact
10: 10mm
40: 40S&W
45: 45 ACP
35: .357 TSW

THIRD DIGIT
0: standard model
1: compact
2: standard with decocker
3: compact with decocker
4: standard with DAO
5: compact with DAO
6: nonstandard barrel length
7: nonstandard barrel length with decocker
8: nonstandard barrel length with DAO

FOURTH DIGIT
3: aluminum frame with SS slide
4: aluminum frame with carbon steel slide
5: carbon steel frame and slide
6: SS frame and slide
7: SS frame and carbon steel slide

There is also the Holy Grail of S&W 3rd gens - the Shorty 40. My favorite of all the Smiths.

Some seem to be 4040's, and there is a 4006 version I think. 9could be wrong on that one)

The 4013/53TSWs' would be the same frame size, but they were never offered blued. The Shorty-Forty uses the same frame size and the MK III version was avaialble in both blue and stainless. The 6900 frame size always felt good to me.

Here's mine (4014).....

I carry it every day. My favorite 3rd gen of all time. Yes, I was very lucky - found it LNIB, all papers and both original magazines, with about 50 rounds max fired through it. I won't tell the price or you would cry.....

I had Tim Thurner of TT Gunleather make me a very sweet IWB for it. If you want a great custom leather holster, I highly recommend TT Gunleather.

Hey, I just looked at that other thread that was linked - more photos of my 4014!

Somewhere I have a copy of a S&W factory letter another guy received on his 4014. There were about 500 made.

You should definitely pick up the latest edition of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, also known as the Bible. Its full of useful information(once you learn how to decipher it!)& is available from Amazon for a reasonable price. Its worth having even if you just like looking at high quality pics of Smith & Wesson's!:D
