I was at the local gun show looking for an auto for the wife to use, (she carries a 'J' frame, not the greatest target gun), for IDPA. Along with many choices, we came across a S&W 6909, a bit shorter barrel than what we were looking for, but I really liked it, (I know, I'm supposed to be looking for the wife....), got home, did some searching on the internet, realized the 6909 is no longer in production. The one at the show was selling for $450, it was quickly offered to us for $425. Seems like a pretty good price, looked brand new. Any way, what are your opinions on this gun?

great gun to use in IDPA I have shot a match with my 6906 and I have shot many with my 6904.`they handle very well and make great ccw guns.

great gun for target and CCW. Some claim they get the same accuracy out of the 6906 as they do with the full size 5906 - which is inherently a very accurate production gun.

6904/6906

Own both - they are both more accurate than I am as the cliche' goes.

$425 is a good price for an excellent one but they can be found for a little less in my area. Unfortunately ( or fortunately depending on your perspective) these gems are often overlooked for the poly guns.

Awesome gun, the first 3rd gen firearm I ever bought. It was also the first DA/SA gun I even bought, but once I got used to that I was shooting extremely tight groupings from 15 yards away and above average groupings from 20+ yards.

It's also so darn pretty to look at too!

Got one over a year ago for $400 with one magazine. It is in excellent condition. Liked it so much a got a 3953 single stack DAO to keep it company in the safe. The 6906 will not disappoint you.

CDNN has them for $329. Here's the one I picked up a few weeks ago.

I paid $425 for mine, I love it and feel like I got my money's worth. I need a Shorty 40 or staggered mag 4013 to go with it now!

Looked over on CDNN, didn't see any 6909s, saw a few 5909s for $299, don't know the difference. Guess I'll have to pay attention when they show up. I'm going to check into holster availability. I know some of the other guns we/she liked are available to rent at some local ranges, doubt I'll find one of these. I gotta keep remembering that this is for the wife, maybe I'll have to add it to the list of things I want, 'course if I can come up better ideas on how to 'sell' it to her....I initially really like the look and feel of it, so did she, our main reasons for looking are primarily something to use at IDPA, now that I think about it, the 6909 is a compact? Maybe not, all the choices at the show start to run together, but from the responses here, the accuracy is good for that purpose and with the wife standing 4' 11" and not much over 100lbs a slightly smaller gun that's all metal should work. More research needed!

...for this reason, you'd better get an all aluminum gun for her. If it's all steel, she may list to her strong side! ;):):D

I covet Dad's 6906. I've shot it more than he has and am quick to sing its praises. You can't go wrong. I'd love to have one of my own but they are scarce at a good price in these parts. The word got around about them.

As for size, it is very comparable to my M&P40c. They even fit perfectly in the same Kholster. Before you ask, I have been known to swap them once in a while...:o

I just got a 6906 from CDNN (call them, not in current catalog) for $367 (gun/mag, extra mag, shipping) plus #30 FFL receiving fee, so $425 isn't too far off for out-the-door GS price.

My 6906 had one tiny scratch on the frame--barely noticeable--and only the slightest holster wear, again barely noticeable.

6906 is a S/S slide and parts in an alloy frame. Nice DA/SA. It's about as "compact" as a 3 gen S&W gets. I put a box thru mine and it shoots great although low for me, but then so does my 4566. Recoil is mild (I'm a .45 ACP guy). Quite pleased with it.

The 5905 is the bigger brother of the 6906, 15 rds versus 12 and larger size. I'm having a bit of trouble finding holsters for 3 gen S&Ws. Most of what I do find are too pricy for my pocket. The search continues...

you should check out Buds in Lexington if you haven't already.

I don't know if you've bought guns on-line before but it's a great way to go if you're careful at all about checking out the seller. Look in the classified section of this website first. Look on GunBroker, GunsAmerica, and GunsInternational among others. There's some local classifieds that even let you make face to face deals like Armslist.com and Gunslisting.org

There are currently over a dozen of these listed on GunBroker and many are in very good shape for very good prices.

I forgot to mention CDDN- they're great guys to deal with. Good call by SMSgt.

I should have added that you also might keep your eyes open for a 6904- which is the same gun as a 6906 but with a blackened finish.

And if you are willing to go with a smaller grip- there is the 3913/3914 which is a compact single stack in 9mm.

Well I'll be... just checked the site and Bud's does have one, in great condition. Very tempting... but can't right now.

I'm not too hot on buying online, though I did once buy a LNIB 4516-2 from a forum member (very fast and easy transaction, Thanks again HG, I love it). That's partly because it's hard to beat Bud's prices and I can drive there, plus a local shop even gets their's through Bud's!

I used to own a 6906 great carry gun and same controls as my Beretta M9. Later my son bought himself a 6906 and me a 6904. The 6904 has a carbon blue slide and blacked aluminum frame. Mine has the second gen rear sights, hooked trigger guard. I perfer it over my G19 however.

Wow, the 6906 sure has a lot of fans, could anyone compare it to a Glock 19, M&P, XD9, these are in the running for the next purchase, we were at a show yesterday, the wife picked up and handled quite a few, we are slowly whittling down the list, (although it keeps growing, Kahr, Sig.... this is like having a Victoria's Secret catalog and getting to pick, all will do the job, just certain details and how will you feel after a day, month, etc.)

Add me to the fan list. I carried a 6906 as a service pistol back in the early 90's and loved the options... Carried it with the 15 shot magazines from the 5906 (2 in the pouch and 1 in the pistol with the grip adapter around the bottom which also added to the length of the grip) while in uniform and off duty I would carry it mostly with a 12 shot magazine with the base pad from a 5906 on it, reduced and radiused to the size of the grip so that the pinky rest found on almost all of the 6906 magazines wouldn't be sticking out and printing through my shirts or jackets.

And if that wasn't enough for off duty carry, my wife has a customized 3914 (avatar picture) that I would also carry from time to time. It's basically the same pistol but with a single stack magazine. Of course her 3914 has a lot of custom work on it so it feels and shoots way better than the average 3913 or 3914. Needless-to-say... Both are KEEPERS and some of my absolute favorites! LONG LIVE THE 3rd GENERATION SMITH's! :)

I don't know that I've ever seen a disparaging word on the forum about the 6906. I know I love mine :D
