Was at a gun show today...

Saw a 3rd gen full size pistol in a case. It's a 45. MPCXXXX serial number. No model #. Doing some research turned up the PC model list on here. So I'm pretty sure what this is. Don't know anything about these but they wanted $1600. The safety/ decodcker doesn't drop the cocked hammer. It does prevent the trigger dropping the hammer.

I own several 3rd gen pistols but am not much for taking them apart. Is the lever not dropping the hammer a big deal? Little issue? Unknown without more info?

And does the price seem out of line? No box or docs. It's in definitely used condition but not abused. Comes with 5 magazines

Looking for opinions as I'm very intrigued and interested

Thanks

That is correct as it’s a safety and not a decocker.

They are really amazing pistols. Some argue that they are the most accurate of all the real PC’s.

Prices aren’t coming down on them and probably won’t.

I can't emphasise what my compadres said enough . Get back down there with cash in hand . Obviously this person doesn't know what he has . My 845 is a piece of art and I would put it up against any production 45 out there .

The 845 is a true heir to the Model 52

Absolutly stellar performance as long as you do your job

My uncle owns an 845 Limited while I own one of the later 845s of 1998

These do not come up often and this one is under market value

I know that the shop is closed by now, but that pistol better be in your possession.

The safety is a hammer block, just like on the model 52 and the model 3566 Limited. Place the safety in the safe position and do your dry-fire practice

The Model 845 was S&W's third gen match grade, single action 45 ACP pistol. The safety is just a safety, it is not supposed to drop the hammer as there is no double action function. You don't see them often and $1600 is an incredible bargain. Makes me wonder what's wrong with it.

So I was wrong. It does come in the original box. I don't think there is anything wrong with it

I don’t believe there is any good reason to expect something is wrong with it. The market is certainly much higher but you must be at least a little bit skilled with searching to be sure of that. A small shop that may not have anyone employed that is internet savvy could skip over this one and an 845 Limited is also one of the odd S&W guns that literally has no model number or identification on the gun itself, which makes it even less obvious for anyone who has no familiarity with these guns.

Original box for these guns is usually a low-end, cheap, ugly, small Doskocil brand plastic case with a cheesy, cheap, ugly gold foil “Performance Center” label stuck on it. I think a few of the earliest 845’s may have shipped in the standard blue plastic box of that era, the one best identified by the plastic latches that break and snap off easily at the hinge point.

If my description of the Doskocil box sounds like I’ve added some snotty attitude to it :D it’s only because I think it’s at least a little funny that what I think is the very best from the Performance Center came in the box that was the cheapest and ugliest.

In a cheap looking black case with the gold foil on it matched to the gun.

It now sits on the table next to me! Thank you all for the advice, information and encouragement. I went back and it was still there so I guess it was meant to be

I'll let you know when I shoot it.

Congrats on a fantastic score! Skip the lottery this week you already won!

Everyone makes the same joke (haha, no originality points… old and over-used…) so I want to frame this more as a cautionary statement then a tired old joke:

You run the absolutely real risk of harming your appreciation of standard production guns with this 845.

That’s real for me. I certainly appreciate what S&W has done with 3rd Gens, I find them historically significant and they are extremely good guns.

But I don’t shoot them much anymore, because my PC guns have altered my expectations at the range.

A Camry is a fine car and will do all that you need. But driving one seems “less than” if you spend most of your fun time in a Ferrari or McLaren.

I think you did really great. It looks to be in fine shape. If you got an ANIB one you’d might be hesitant to run it like you should.

I’m sure you know this but there are still new factory grips available, (for now.) New grips make a big difference cosmetically and are still pretty cheap. Maybe check out a curved one? For me curved ones feel “right” on some and not on others but I have that option. I liked the curved ones on my 845 but a straight one is on it now.
