I did a search here on the forum for 986 the newer 9MM revolver

Nothing came up I cant believe a few guys here dont have one
Are they as cool as I think they would be?
I am hot for one and would love some thoughts from those who have shot one
Thanks HAnk

Totally useless as a competition revolver, so of no interest to me.

Hank,
For the first in years, S&W has introduced a 9MM revolver again. This is a pro series firearm so it has several Performance Center inspired upgrades. This includes the PC spring set, and the PC profile barrel.

The 986 is a 7 shot revolver that uses full moon clips. The barrel is 5" and the revolver has a Titanium cylinder. The lighter rotating weight of the cylinder combined with the PC spring set makes the action light, smooth and fast

Like most modern S&Ws the firearm I shot was quite accurate. Reloads were fast.

Since this is a moon-clipped revolver, you could shoot 380ACP out of the factory gun as it ships

Of course the new 9MM revolvers lend themselves to some interesting conversions. The cylinder could be easily opened up for 38 Super, 9x21, 356TSW or even 9x23 Winchester.

I have one and it's been fun to shoot, I use it in steel challenge and uspsa. I have had to rework the crimps on my reloads to keep from having bullet creep. The other thing is trying to find a holster for it has been tough, no one makes one for a 5 in. L frame yet, so I'm having one made. If you can get one do it they are fun and you can use the same ammo for it and your semi-auto once you get things worked out . I love shooting mine.

Reviving an old thread: MWC2068, have you gotten anyone to make you a holster for the 986 yet? I'm also looking for a holster for mine! I've seen it suggested that a five-inch .357 "L" frame, full-lug holster would work? Does that sound reasonable? Heck, does anyone make a 5 inch L frame holster? :)

TrooperDan, I had two leather ones made, both were priced around 50- 60 bucks each, One was from Wild West Products in Lyman , Wyoming, it's more western style and works geat, the other is a bit more modern, with a thumb snap and FBI slant forward, it's a Shamrock Holster from Craig , Colo..shamrockholsters.com. I'm going to use that one for USPSA and Steel Challenge. I'll try and take some pics and post later.

I think that the model is the packer, call him and tell him what you are looking for, and that he already built one for an order from Rock Springs, Wyo. and he should be good to go.

I bought a 940 back in the late 80's and it was nothing but trouble, S&W worked on it a couple of times, and now it lives in the safe,
It had a lot of extraction problems.

Hopefully the 986 works better.

Went back to a 38 special and never looked back.

I had a couple of minor problems off the get go with the supplied moon clips and a loose tension screw. TK got me the right clips and I tightened the screw and now it runs great.

I can't say enough good things about the 986. It is one my favorite revolvers and it is also extremely accurate.

Those holsters look good, that is the next thing on the list to get.
