This 1st Model shipped in July 1871
IIRC only around 200 guns were shipped in 1870, mostly as promos or gifts. So 1871 was really the first year of commercial production.
I posted this before I bought it.
I got mixed reviews.
I bought it anyway.
It is either a nearly new (with some moisture flaking) example or a spectacular renovation.
The inside also looks new
here is another, First Model SN 3079. MW Robinson had it shortened and engraved to fill a special order. It is actually chambered for a .44 Russian, not a .44 American...
I believe the ammunition box dates to the 1870's. I ammunition is for the 44 American caliber with no head stamp. There is a similar box for the "Russian Model" (see attached picture) that has 44 Russian ammo. The Russian box likely dates to the introduction of the 1st Model Russian. Both types of boxes were probably available at the same time since the American and Russian Models were available in the early 1870's.
Got this off of a friend of mine a few weeks ago Serial number 25. It has been sent back to Smith twice in its life. 11-1914 and 08-1958 in 58 it was nickel plated and has a star stamped beside the serial number. It has old ivory grips on it but I also have the original wood grips that are serial numbered to the gun. It also came with a Smith letter. It said my gun was sold 10-26-1870 to and shipped to M.W. Robinson in New York City NY. Smith & Wesson's largest distributor. It was shipped with a 7 inch barrel and blue finish with smooth walnut grips. It was shipped in a lot of 25 guns.
