I saw a S&W 19, no lock, marked "B19". It also had the older looking silver hammer and trigger. I opened the cylinder to check the dash, but it only had "B19" and an assembly number.

A serial number would tell the story.
It had target grips, so I couldn't see the serial number. The silver hammer and trigger threw me as well, but they could have been added from an early stainless gun.

There are several possibilities...

Did it have a four-screw frame, pinned/recessed, diamond Target stocks? If so, likely a .357 Combat Magnum, or pre-model 19.

If not all the above features, the factory may have just missed stamping the yoke recess with the model number.

Knowing the serial number (K 260000 to 300000s would be CM, pre-model stamped) range would be good. Photos even better. :)

The grips weren't diamond, but they like the hammer and trigger may not be original to the gun. If I can get back that way, I'll check in the serial number.

In the past people use to "jewel" the hammer and trigger so that is what you think is silver.

That is one example of a jeweled hammer and trigger.
