The throats in an .38 S&W cylinder may be a bit larger.

I'm sure the 38 Special reamer removed the 38 S&W throats.

If I really wanted to shoot it a lot, and especially if I were reloading the brass, which will definitely get some extra expansion toward their bases from that altered chamber, I would look for a 38 Spl cylinder to install. Otherwise I’d just shoot the heck out of it and enjoy the bargain it is! Nice find.
