Not much help here except to say that our local PD uses a couple for their summer bike patrols. I would assume that they are made by another company and licensed out to S&W. Perhaps it would be helpful to know who the real manufacturer is.

ETA: Interesting. It appears to be distributed by a company called Cycle Force Group, which claims:
YES, the world famous gun maker also makes bicycles. Several years ago Smith & Wesson started building bicycles specifically designed for law enforcement, security and public service officers. Smith & Wesson Bikes are superbly built and designed to take on the constant use and abuse demanded by 8-hour days on the streets.

Nothing special, just with S&W decals.

I went to the site also..made by Ming Bicycle, Tiawan..not a chicom POS....
Didn't see anything about carbon fiber frames, exotic gearsets, special saddles etc, etc..it looks like a fairly stout steel frame with what appears to be a fairly standard Shimano gearset; I'd tend to think the bike would be fine for some urban commuting/suburban riding as long as one doesn't think it's going to perform like a competition/road bike.
Patrs should be easy to find and it should be fairly easy to keep maintained..JMVHO & YMMV

Check eBay under Smith & Wesson...frequently they have 2 bike styles ranging from $800-$1,200. Some police depts use them. Don't know about quality level but the price would suggest above average.

Buy a better quality bike. You can find a nice Trek 24 speed mountain bike in a bike shop for around $300.00.

Good quality, mid range price and 100% better than the discount crap.
You can spend more money, but I don't think you need to for your needs.

Also check Craigs List in your area for a used better quality bike.

Last year I sold a 6 year old $600.00 like new Trek Hybred for $200.00.

I went through the getting a bike thing a couple years back. I wanted one to fit- not the hand me down freebies I had. At 6'5 I needed a larger than most frame to be correct. I was buying parts for a 50 cal air rifle from an industrial supplier and the guy at the counter was razzing me so I asked what his hobbies were. He said bikes- I asked "harleys" he got sheepish and said no- pedal bikes... I got excited for I needed good info and asked him. I wanted american if possible etc but asked if american/better bikes were worth it over the china etc and he said I already knew the answer

He called his guy at the bike shop he has dealt with for years and said he was sending me over.

Cannondale still made an american bike at the time and I wanted a hybrid. Or maybe a mountain bike. The guy showed me quite a bit but said I did not want to buy new from him... he said he had another customer that was into bikes and had one my size he just put 250 dollars in for a new suspension fork/maintenance. He said it was really clean and the guy takes care of his stuff and tha 200 instead of the 650.00 I was looking at for the one he had I wanted.

I said to him that I appreciated the info but since he was indeed honest I would be buying the hybrid new from him- I like to support honest and good stores/companies that support the people more than just a sale. I also asked for the number of the guy with the mountain bike.

A few days went by and the guy called me... I went to see his bike and indeed it was very clean and well taken care of. Funny thing is it was a Raleigh that was actually made here in the states! I got it for 125.00

So now I have a hybrid for the roads and bike trails here and the mountain bike for the rougher trails if I want it.

I enjoy riding them even if I don't ride enough yet. I definitely feel a good bike is better than walking if we ever have a hard time getting fuel...

Support a local shop and learn... or watch to used markets for really good deals if ya are mechanical at all. Most bikes are not used to destruction.

Most of these bikes are coming off the same factory lines in Taiwan and China. The only difference is QC per individual line.

Does Smith even put their name on bikes anymore?
