I am spending way too much time on gunbroker lately (bought a 18-4, got a high bid on another 18-4 as well as a few other old models). There is a book that some members use here to date the guns as well as give other information. Can someone tell me what the name of the book is? I thought I found it on Amazon, but they don't seem to have any so I just want to make sure.

This isn't the way to get over this addiction.

Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson, 3rd edition, by Supica and Nahas. Enjoy the addiction :) .

The SCSW...

Will only add to your addiction. It is packed with great information. A friend has sold me the 2nd edition. I already had the 3rd. You will enjoy!

That is what I thought, but that addition was released in 2007, and are expensive used on Amazon. Is there going to be a new edition released soon?

SCSW info has...

The 2nd edition was done in 2001-320 pages-b&w photo's
The 3rd edition was done in 2006 -432 pages-color photo's
There just might be a 4th, but I have not heard of it coming.
I would buy a 4th edition.

The vast majority of the information in the 3rd edition is still current, such as the history and production data. The value estimates may be outdated, but best to do your own up-to-date research on that anyhow. There are rumors of a 4th edition but nothing definite.

I recently bought a 3rd edition on Ebay. I don't do Ebay much but I wanted the book. Barnes & Noble showed a used one for $176.80.

Appearently, the new MSRP for the book was $39.95.

I paid $50.00 with shipping and was glad to get it.

It's a great source of information and well worth the price.

Gun Digest Books and Midsouth Shooters Supply list the 3rd edition for under $30. This is about the price Amazon was asking when the book first came out. The book dealer who is also a director of the Michigan Antique Arms Collectors usually brings a few copies to the shows and he prices around $30. The book is worth every penny of $30, but I would begin to look around if quoted $176, for a copy. Good Luck!

I just went walking in to my local Barnes and Noble about 6 months ago and bought it for MSRP minus my frequent buyer discount. Money well spent, but now I'm frustrated and want more specific details about this, that and the other. There are so many variations, manufacturing changes, etc, etc, that even a great work like SCSW can't begin to cover them all.

Thanks. I took a look and I will probably order from them pretty soon.

Just got my copy from S&W yesterday.
Moving from version 1 it's a great leap forward for mankind.

Ordering a second copy for my best shootin' bud.
