Yesterday, my cousin called me and said a LGS in a town about 50 miles from me had bought a collection of S&W revolvers. It was too near closing time so I got up early today (Saturday) and was there just after they opened.

I also met a gentleman who is also an S&W collector and member here (can't remember his screen name). The employee said they were the personal guns of a local S&W collector and he "kept his nice stuff." All were in pristine condition and all in the box.

They originally got over 50 revolvers from the 1950's to the 1990's. They had already sold about 20 on the first day they put them out (Friday). They sold three as soon as they put them out today. Lots of J and K frame guns. Most of the N frame guns were already sold when I got there.

I was able to get the gun below. Its a 686-3, four inch, in Midnight Black from 1989. The gun is in good condition, supposedly unfired from the factory, but it has a few small blemishes. I have a 19-5 DSS and a 36-6 in the same finish and I already knew that particular finish is not very durable so no surprise that the gun is not pristine just from handling.

It came in a mahogany display case, although I don't believe this is original. It has the paperwork, sealed cleaning kit with the sight adjustment tool and the original end label from the box.

I have read everything I can find about the run of guns. My only question deals with the gold lettering on the gun. I remember people filling the lettering/S&W emblem with gold/white/red in the 70's, but don't know if this was done aftermarket or if it might be original???

I was also wondering what the experts here would value the package I got today at.

Thanks in advance.

I bought one when they were first introduced. Came in the one piece box, no gold fill. Yes indeed the finish isn't very durable. A friend really wanted it so I sold it to him as I have a 686 no dash my late father bought new in 1981.

I saw one of those in a store in Sacramento on a bottom shelf. At first I thought I was seeing things as there was not much light to get a clear vision of it. Seemed to suck up the light and appeared invisible if you did not look directly at it.

Guns that normally came in presentation cases, also came with another box or two.

I have a model 25 that came with a presentation case, blue cardboard box, and the shipping container. The shipping container had the gun's label affixed to it. S&W did use some gold waxy type paint to fill in roll marks, but I doubt they would have on a normal production gun.

I am suspect of the presentation case, and the label being original to the gun.

I've never seen that gun bring a premium, but it's still a version of one of the finest revolvers ever made. I'd value it $150 to $200 below a blued model.

Agree - I had one of those 686's back in the day and it came in a regular box. They did not ship with presentation cases and there was no gold lettering and that label is a fake. Otherwise, I would believe the value would be $100 over a 586 or 686 due to it's rarity.

That would have had a printed label by that time.

I have a 586 and a 681 both no dash that have their original 1 piece blue fold box with insert. They have hand written labels.
My 686-1 and 686-3 have printed labels.

The warranty card and ammunition brochure are from the 1970's.

That aside, nice find.

Man I'm kinda jealous, I remember when they came out in the 80s, I already had a 686nd with a 4inch bbl. Thought to myself who the hell wants one of those, just buy a 586. Now I'm kicking my ***. Oh well bought a 581 instead.

586

I had one with a 6" barrel. I put a red dot on it to shoot 2700. From a rest, it put 5 rounds in 1 jagged hole.

Fool & their $$ & guns are soon parted.

I am guilty of selling the gun
