Can you guys educate me please? Does a department (or whoever) request a commemorative model for an anniversary/occasion and commit to a purchase amount? I'm just curious.
I'd love to hear everyone's back story on how they acquired their commemoratives as well.

I sometimes forget what a beautiful gun this is. Its my only commemorative. Its the only .45 Colt that I have too.
I'm sure that you all know its a 125th Anniversary 25-3.
I have all the original shipping boxes and papers too.
I really like everyone's LE commemoratives. They are just plain cool.

My brother bought two back in 1977 for $350 each.
He shot one of them quite a bit and sold it a few years later for $700 which paid for both of them.
He never shot this one, the one he ended up with for free.

I no longer own this one as I gave it to my daughter, but it's still in the family. It a 50th Anniversary of the 357 Magnum 5" 27-3.
I have an 125 anniversary and an Alaskan Silver Anniversary Model 29 1 of 300 I have to dig around see if there is any more.

Have always thought it a bit odd for commemoratives to be offered in a model that has absolutely no connection to anything the stated agency ever used or issued.
There was once a firm offering a pair of commemoratives for the agency I was with. They were a boxed set with a M586 4" and a M36 2".
Nice - but neither of those models have any history with that agency.
And, we've seen pretty nickel M29's for agencies of course never using anything remotely close.
Have even seen a beautiful Colt Peacemaker for a county sheriff's office in our area. Um - obviously no connection.

The only reason I have one is in 44-40 and Smith Wesson only made that caliber in the 544 Wagon Train

A Texas LEO department that doesn't get much notoriety (unless it screws up), Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission, T.A.B.C., had a commemorative revolver made up in 1985, their 50th anniversary. S&W 686, 4". Has the wooden display box with the revolver and a copy of their badge displayed inside the box. I think mine is stamped 174 of 400 (or something like that). I bought it in 1985 for $450.00 which was quite a chunk of change back then. I'd post a photo but it is so far back in the safe and hasn't see daylight in 30 years. Maybe they didn't make that many or perhaps people hang on to them, but I've never seen another one.

+1 on the Texas Ranger Commemoratives (150th Anniv.). I picked up a revolver/knife set a few months ago (TR6362)...but it's a shooter not a collectible. It's had some holster and shootin' time, but that's OK- that's exactly what I was looking for and the condition matched the price I paid. The features, stocks, and finish on this 19-3 are outstanding and it's smooth as silk. The exterior finish on the wooden case was a little rough, so I did refinish it in more of a Texas post oak stain that I thought would be more fitting for a Texas Rangers commemorative.

Don't know if 50 or 5000 was made and the etching changed.... I have an Alabama State Troopers commemorative that is 1 of 50 made.
ETA: not being LE, I acquired mine the same as any other pistol.... cash on the barrel head.
Being LNIB.....just a little more cash.

I have a M544 that I bought off of the internet back in 2004 or '05. I believe it was on GunsAmerica. Mine looks like it was drug down a gravel road fer a mile or two. The price was reasonable for the condition. The bore and chambers are perfect and it shoots just fine.
