I've noticed over the last little bit - and in two current threads - that alot of folks new to S&W compact 45 models, such as the 457, 4516 and 4513, have been mentioning "problems" seating a mag.

Last night I recieved a call from an acquaintance who had just recieved a 457 pistol. He was frustrated and claimed the pistol was "broken" as it "would not seat a magazine with the slide forward." As I had advised him to purchase the 457 rather than an XD or M&P, this was somehow "my fault". ;)

I had him bring me his 457 and the three mags it came with. I checked it clear, dropped the slide and proceeded to insert and SLAP the first mag home. "HEY! GO EASY!" said he. Au contrare. One must firmly SLAP the base of the 7-round compact 45 mag, with the ball of the off hand, in order to assure it locks into the mag well. Especially a brand new magazine filled to capacity as when topping off your gun. I proceeded to demonstrate with all three of his mags including one filled to capacity.

A FIRM SLAP gents. Not violence, but firmness. Then give it a tug on the base between your thumb and forefinger to assure yourself it is indeed seated. An ounce of prevention for when Mr Murphy is about. :)

While those of us who have years behind these pistols may know this trick, be sure and demonstrate the method for those new to the 3rd gen compacts. Evidently those who are experienced with other single stack pistols have a little difficulty, at first, with the compact S&W 45's.

Hope this helps! :) Regards 18DAI

Might I suggest that a "firm press" would be preferrable to the slap-unless the pistol is misbehaving.

I really do have to wonder about some folks, I've "cured" a number of malfunctioning pistols by simply holding the weapon firmly enough that it would cycle.

Amen to the firm hold! The 5" 1911 doesn't need more of a base than it provides for itself to cycle...not so with some smaller autos! My .380 PPK/S runs great as long as I give it proper support...ease off too much and the energy needed for cycling bleeds out through my hand and arm! This is true of many autos. Excellent point to bring up.:)

I just got 2 brand new mags for my 4506, and the magazines are so stiff in them that I can't just hold down the slide stop and cycle the gun like with my older mags (during practice). They also require a bit more force when inserting them into the gun with the slide forward.

Treating their gun like its fine china seems to be a common trait amongst most new shooter in my experience.

18DAI,

Great tip. That 4516-3 is back on GB, the one I asked you about, and in the description for the listing the seller indicates that the magazine won't seat properly and that you can't return it because of that. I'm tempted by that one just because I've never seen one locally (the -3 version that is), and I've seen you speak very highly of your 4516-3. I do like the shorter tang of the 4516-1, but I also like the looks of the laser etching on that dash 3.

Also on my mind is a blue Series 80 Colt Commander in GREAT shape locally for a VERY good price, but it's got all sorts of aftermarket "upgrades" on it. It needs some loving care to get it looking right again. I don't have time for "projects" so I'm letting it sit there for a while. Same shop has a never-been-holstered, fired a few times 19-3 2.5". Decisions decisions.

Hi xopher88X,

I advise you to buy the 19-3 2.5 inch FIRST! ;) Superior self defense handgun, IMO of course.

In fact step back from the computer and RUN down there and buy it NOW! It won't be there tomorrow! :) You will be glad you bought it.

Then pick up a 4516 next month. ;) Regards 18DAI

I remember hearing the range master shout, "Slap that ***** like she wants her money!!!"

The not too PC days were rare and few between but they were there. And they were very memorable training sessions. And they WORKED...

18DAI, you are correct sir, that IS the way it is supposed to be done. Doing otherwise is a setup for poor performance and "problems". Good post.

Well, I think I'll leave well enough alone after what 18DAI has written, helped along by WR Moore.

For the occasional shooter I've come across who for some reason seems to think they can't develop the awareness and control to know the difference between inserting a fresh magazine when the slide is forward or locked back?

Well, does that mean they don't expect to be able to know when they should put their left foot on the break pedal versus the clutch pedal? (Okay, so some folks may never be able to master a manual transmission ... or learn how to maneuver a shopping cart through the supermarket isles. )

Just kidding.

Good thoughts.

I agree with 18DAI. Particularly when I add the +1 to both my 4513TSW a slightly more than firm insertion is required.

I enjoy reading these posts. They are a wealth of great information. Keep it coming!!!!!

I'll go along with 18DAI, I carried a 4506-1 for 5yrs as LEO, an you slap those mags home, and there will be no problem. I now have a 4566, an am looking for a 4516-1/2/3 for a full time CCW. That backed up with two spare mags, a 640ND speedloader an strip. Should be very comforting in my travels through this world!!!!

Recently purchased a sealed factory mag for my 4516-1 with a black follower and having being used to the original yellow follower mag, there was quite a bit more pressure needed to seat it with the stiffer mag spring of course.Didn't slap it but pushed it in and and gave it a final shove until I heard the mag catch "click" but at the range it fed like the original and never bobbled one time.I sure was nervous with a new mag because I didn't want to break the 100% reliability streak the pistol has.I've often wondered if I loaded rocks into a S&W mag if it would feed them?:D

Charlie111 I'm with ya 100% on that! There are some great folks with a wealth of info that are happy to guide us in the right direction. Can't tell ya how many times I have pestered Fastbolt and he has gone to great lengths in great detail to help me along the way-I even offered him a little $ for all of his help and all he replied was De Nada:) This place is the best place on the internet IMO.
