I've got a 38/44 HD Model of 1950 that dates to around 1956 per the serial#. It's got excessive endshake and a little wobble in the cylinder but the timing is fine and it shoots very well. Was thinking about shipping it of to S&W to have the cylinder play and end shake corrected but didn't know if they would work on this old of a firearm? Anyone know if/what the cutoff date is?

I just had a 1955ish Cheifs Special repaired by Smith & Wesson with out any issue. Quick turn around as well.

Service

Smith has never blinked on any service request for me, and I have sent them some not so common goodies.

Thank you all. The reason I asked is that I thought I recalled reading on a couple of occasions that S&W would/could not service some firearms after a certain age due to lack of parts should something break.

P.S. Who/how did you contact S&W regarding your repairs?

I called S&W a month or so ago about rebluing a pre-27, and the guy I talked to in Customer Service said that they don't work on pre model numbered guns any more, because of not having parts.

FYI, the lifetime warranty covers handguns made after feb. 1, 1989.

Lifetime Warranty, sure--they'll fix it on their dime (if it's broken). Lifetime Service, on the other hand, means that they'll fix it on your dime, but they will fix it, if they can.

About 10 yrs ago I had much the same work done on a 1947 Pre model 17. It cost me less than $40.00 and the turn around was fast.
