I have a Model 17-3 that has developed push off and I would like to have it corrected properly . For those of you that have dealt with the S & W factory service/repair how was your experience ?

"Hit and miss" would be the most polite answer I can give at this point.

Can you advise if you've checked the single action trigger pull with a pull gauge and what the current SA pull is? The pull rate result could indicate the source of the problem.

If the trigger pull is very light, (less than 2.5 pounds) check to make sure that the strain screw on the hammer spring is turned all the way in. Also, if you are able to disassemble, check the status of the rebound spring. If the rebound slide spring has been cut, or replaced with an aftermarket light weight spring, changing the rebound spring back to an OEM spring may solve the problem without further alteration or intervention.

No I haven't actually checked the SA trigger pull with a gauge but it's pretty light and yes I did check the strain screw and it's fine.
I purchased this revolver about 8 yrs . ago . It was/is in excellent condition with minimal signs of use. I haven't really used it a lot . About 18 months ago I noticed that the SA trigger pull suddenly changed and became noticeably lighter. Also with the hammer in the cocked position if I apply firm pressure with my thumb it releases . It would appear that a previous owner had some work done on it at some point in it's past.
In any event it's mine now and I'd like it to get it properly repaired . I was hoping that I could get it serviced by S & W themselves but don't know about the quality of their customer service.

You could give Customer Service a call but I'm not sure they are accepting any work right now due to backlogs etc. Be sure to have your model number and serial number ready if/when you call. They will need this info.

The other problem is, their preferred repair methods nowadays involve installation of new parts instead of repairing the existing components, and I don't believe they would have any remaining forged/case hardened parts available to use in your revolver to repair this condition.

If you have a trained, trusted gunsmith in your area, he should be able to repair this issue in no time, without the need for any new parts, as long as the existing hammer/trigger are not damaged. If it's a matter of the parts suffering normal wear and tear, the repair procedure involves re-sharpening the bevel on the trigger. The armorers school teaches a very easy bench-top method for doing this repair that takes just a few minutes, and restores the trigger hammer interface to good as new condition. Your experienced gunsmith should be familiar with this procedure.

The other option would be to try to find a S&W trained revolver armorer in your area. They would be able to diagnose and repair this condition in no time.

As of 4/11/22, S&W is not taking any charge repair work. If it's not under warranty, you're out of luck. I just found out myself.
I asked for recommendations here on the forum and dropped my revolver off at a recommended gunsmith just this morning.
