I had purchased a very good S&W Heavy Duty 5 inch, picked it up yesterday. Has "S" prefix for the hammerblock safety according to my gunsmith friend. He checked it out and said it's in very good mechanical order and not overly used, just some honest holster wear…very good condition.

Shot it over the chronograph this Saturday morning:

5.3 grs N340 with 178 Keith SWC (Matt's Bullets) averaged 948 fps (10 shots)

5.3 grs N340 with 158 gr Hornady lead SWC
averaged 961 fps (10 shots)

4.7 grs Unique with 158 gr Hornady lead SWC averaged 906 fps (10 shots)

The loads above are fine with me…I don't intend to hotrod my only Heavy Duty with stiff charges of 2400. You can I won't. I respect it's age and value, and when I need something hotter, I'll turn to my Ruger 4 5/8 357 Magnum Blackhawk.

…the 178 gr Keith shot very accurately and is all I really need for fun in my HD.

These are my loads for use in my revolver only. Always refer to current published load data, it's instructions and all applicable information first before reloading.

Nice find.

I like a longer barrel for field work with the longer sight radius to help me out, with a little more accuracy.

Let us know how that 178 gr. does on Nevada Jack rabbits, if you ever get a chance to spot a few?

Here's mine. It shipped in 1936 to the Manchester, NH Police Department. Those grips are not original to the gun and were on it when I got it about 35 years ago. I've shot it a bit and it is a sweet shooter but it is a safe queen now. I would not feel under gunned going on duty with it.

I haven't seen too many of these varmits around this year…

Very nice revolver. Thank you for the data from that 5" barrel. It's good to have for comparing against other barrel lengths and revolver types.
