Ok I need to get a hand gun registered and they are asking for info I just do not have.

I have a smith & weston 38 spl model 60. a very short barrel length.

Personally measuring the barrel from all the way back to the end of the cylinder, to the tip of the barrel I am coming out to 1 and 3/4ths of an inch. but I do not seem to find that as an official barrel length? The barrel length is of course one of the bits of info I need to register it.

I am not a gun guy, I've just inherited this and wanna make it legal. Anyone gimme some help on this I would appreciate it.

Here is the other gun I inherited just for fun, it's obviously more of a show piece. Its a Ruger old army ball & cap gun anodized with titanium oxide.

Welcome to the Forum, and sorry to hear you live in a state that requires you to register your guns with the authorities .

If you open the cylinder, under the barrel on the frame it should be stamped MOD (for model) 60. Officially it has a 2" barrel, so go with that. If you take off the stocks, at the bottom of the grip frame there will be a letter or letters and/or a number; whatever is stamped, letters and all, is the serial number. You already know it is a .38 Special, and that should be all the info you (the authorities) need. Hope this is helpful.

MOD 60 is stamped (well actually, looks like the dye struck twice so i was not 100% sure that it was MOD 60) where you said, then right under that on the cylinder mount? (again not a gun guy, sorry from any wrong nomenclature) is a 5 digit number that I thought was the serial number.

Is this not the serial number?

Other gun makers put the SN where you describe, but S & W did not during this time on this model. This is a factory internal code number.

If you have the number off the grip frame and want to post part of it (like R 123xxx) we can tell you when it shipped from the factory.
