I am not a knife collector and know very little about knives.

I purchased this knife new several years ago and threw it in the gun safe because it said Smith and Wesson. I was wondering if it has any collector value. If not I think I will put it in my pocket for daily use, because the lock my old timer broke and I'm to cheap to buy a new one.

I figure hundreds of thousands of these were made but I noticed it said USA on the blade.

It does not have any collector value, in my opinion. I can not find it in any of my S&W knife catalogs, so I suspect it is a vendor's sample, made in the US probably in Vermont, circa 1970s, that was not accepted by the factory for official S&W sales. There literally 1,000s of vendors samples out there submitted to S&W licensing, that were made up with the S&W name and sometimes the logo also, but were not approved by the factory. Those knives were then dumped off to discount knife dealers sellers and show up at gun shows, in discount catalogs and on ebay, etc for $5 to $15 price ranges. I pity future S&W knife collectors trying to sort out which knife is a S&W authorized knife, or not. Worse yet, S&W didn't keep any records ( that are available to collectors) on who they licensed as makers or what they selected from samples submitted. Ed.

Thanks for the information!

I figured it was a run of the mill knife but thought I would ask before I used it.
