I am looking at getting a Rifle im still really used to my M4 Military issued one. But I am looking for a rifle that is good for targeting shooting etc but not expensive. Through my local gun shop they have one for $619 is that a good deal this rifle or not?

$619 for a M&P15 Sport is ok - not great. I paid $599 a month ago and I have seen $569 advertised.

The Sport is a great rifle, especially when factoring the price. Good build, lifetime warranty, great bang for the buck. Mine keeps a 1-2" group at 100 using a Bushnell TRS-25. Not a single failure so far.

The Sport is an awesome AR. Accurate out of the box & is reliable. Have put 2k rounds on mine w/ no issues.

At the price you mentioned, I assume you're looking at a 15-Sport. $619 was average a few months ago. I see people posting links to online vendors selling 15-Sports for anywhere between $535 - $600. IMO, factor in shipping and FFL transfer fee and that online price may be comparable to a bricks and mortar store.

I've owned a 15-Sport since 2011. Throughout the years, the mods, and the adjustments it has never failed me. $619 is definitely a good price compared to the peak of the great firearms panic of 2013. I was offered $1,500 - $2,000 for my 15-sport.

Even though I'm a 15-Sport owner, there are lots of good rifles at good prices out there. Take a look at all of them. Give it some thought. Does this rifle have the features I want? Do I feel the need for a forward assist and dust cover? To what distances do I plan to shoot? What features do I need to support the shooting I plan to do?

Things to consider with a 15-Sport.
  • Carbine length handguards with no heat shields.
  • A2-F front sight post
  • No forward assist.
  • No dust cover
  • The barrel is not chrome lined. It's melonite treated.

What type of target shooting are you planning on? Shooting off-hand out to 100 yards? Shooting off a bench beyond 100 yards?

Black rifle sales are WAY DOWN per many magazine articles and gun blogs, so look for price declines or deals with extras included.

$619 is still a decent deal. It is a nice carbine, but you won't win any bench rest matches with it.

John's questions are good ones. What exactly do you mean by, "I am looking for a rifle that is good for targeting shooting etc"? What type of target shooting and what's the "etc." that you'll be doing?

I bought one recently for $599, the dealer (LGS) threw in a free box of 150 rounds Ammo.. Shoots well right out of the box, I may look to upgrade the front sight.

I just paid $599 for mine in SoCal. I did NOT get any free ammo. One hundred-fifty rounds for free... wow you got a good deal. I did a bit of research before I settled on the M&P 15 and I just couldn't find anyone who had something bad to say about it. It was a no-brainer.

Yeah, the Colt LE 6920 I just bought last week has a free Carhat jacket promotion that comes with it.
CDNN is offering a free carry case and 4 or 5 free magazines with the purchase of any AR rifle.

Yeah, CDNN has some good deals. If just starting out, that Colt for $899 would be hard to pass up. For the low ball number, the Windham for $599 looks like a good way to go. 5 mags. What's not to like?

There certainly better deals out there but check the warranty and CS before deciding on a model. I got my MP15 for $679 from my local range and it came with a 30 round Pmag and MBUS rear sight as well as that A2 F front sight.

I didn't feel bad about what I paid for because the future was uncertain and I just want to get my hand on one in case of the SHTF.

I like my MP15 well enough, I shot 3 brands of 223 and 1 brand of 556 NATO and the MP15 is consistant. I only shoot at 25 yards and always hit under 2". Any further out I'm gonna need a scope but it's my HD gun so that kind of accuracy is good enough for me.

It's more accurate than me. :p

ETA: I should mention that my range prepped the MP15 for me when I went to pick it up and shoot (for free).

M & P Sport......The most bang for the buck.....

Mine's good......

No complaints on my Sport either. I've put close to 1500 rounds thru mine so far without a hiccup. Zero malfunctions! And I've shot everything from Wolf Polymer to Federal American Eagle. Two of my buddies have one as well and they report zero malfunctions. As others have stated, $619 is an average deal. My LGS is selling them for $599. A few online vendors are selling cheaper and by the time you add transfer fee you are at around $565. The advantage of buying online is if the dealer is from out of state, you save on sales tax.

This is a great rifle. Grabagun.com has them for $560. then you pay an FFL to recieve it for you. Don't pay more than $30 for an FFL. There are NO shortcuts in the production of this rifle and for the most part it is MILSPEC.

good luck

I love mine, shoots like a champ and I lost count on how many rounds I have through it. I have got some new Magpul furniture on it today, there new MOE SL hand guard.
I usually shoot mine with just the iron sights at 50-65 yards and get really good groups. I have always been good with iron sights not much with optics.
I paid like $700.00 for mine at a local gun shop about over a year ago. I have put several different kinds of ammo through it in .223/5.56 and have had only a few mag related issues. After 500 rounds it started to shoot even better I think this was the break in period of the rifle. I want to change out the muzzle brake/flash suppressor with a Jerry M. here soon.
