I was a long time Glock user for my PD job. 19 years with a personally owned, very early 2nd Gen G21, a couple years with a PD issued Gen4 G22, then 2 or 3 years with a personally owned 3rd Gen G19. I have had quite a few issues over the years with Glock's customer service and corporate policies and was looking for something different. I looked around and didn't find anything that I really liked, that I could find a basketweave Safariland duty holster for anyway (the PD requires basketweave holsters and all I will use for duty holsters is Safariland). I had tried several different versions of the older M&Ps and, while I loved the ergonomics, I HATED the triggers, Mushy and squishy with no discernible reset.
When S&W came out with the M&P 2.0, an online acquaintance talked me into buying on. To me, they were everything the 1.0 versions weren't. VERY ergonomic and feels like it was made for my hand. While it wasn't a lot more accurate than my G19, the way the gun fit me and worked made it a lot easier to shoot well than the G19. The trigger is GREAT! Reasonable pull weight (I don't have a trigger scale, I'd guesstimate it breaks at about 5 lbs), VERY smooth after breaking it in, very light takeup till you hit the wall, then a smooth, crisp break. The reset is lightning fast and, while not as audible or tactile as a Glock, it is a LOT more audible and tactile than the 1.0 versions and more than good enough.
The grip texture is the elephant in the room. Initially, I loved the rough texture. It really planted the gun in my hand and it didn't move a bit, even with wet and sweaty hands. The problem started when I started carrying it. The texture is rough enough that, with long sleeve polyester duty shirts, the texture was abrading and pilling the inside of the right sleeve just from my arm occasionally brushing the holstered gun when walking. In short sleeves, when hot and sweaty, the grip texture sometimes irritates my inner right arm, again just from occasionally brushing it when walking. I tried carrying it IWB a few times and the texture REALLY irritates my side. I took a little sandpaper to the grip, and the issues with my uniform shirt sleeve and bare inner arm are gone, but it's still too rough for IWB. I'm going to sand the left side of the grip a little more when the weather cools off some and I can work in the garage without sweating my tail end off and we'll see how it works.
Despite the texture issue, I love the pistol enough that I spent the cash to buy a Safariland ALS duty holster, which added about $100.00 to the cost and I am using it as my duty gun. I love it enough that the only thing that may (may, not definite) make me give it up is an all black, non-Performance Center 5" version.
Overall, the 2.0 is a GREAT handgun. I love mine and carry it on duty. As far as I'm concerned, that should be the highest praise anyone could pay it, that they consider it duty ready and would willingly carry it. Mine is personally owned, so I obviously willingly carry it. It pairs up well with the old 9mm Shield I carry off duty, too.
