Hello ~ Found this new-to-me model for sale on Gunbroker while perusing the S&W 357s for sale.

Smith & Wesson S&W 520 .357 Mag BIN $1099.99 357 : Revolvers at GunBroker.com

It appears to be a fixed sight version of the m28 without the Highway Patrolman designation. Cool looking gun;has that "I'm all business" look like the m58s do.

Anyway, I tried finding any references to it on this forum with no luck. Is this a rare model, and why no talk about it?

Just curious, not buying right now.

"S&W Model 520 .357 mag, recessed cylinder, pinned hammer and barrel, all original bluing and factory original wood presentation grips with S&W Medallion, over all condition 98%, bore condition 100%,"

I guess that is as good a description as any. I have heard it described as a fixed sight Model 27.

In either event, it is a .357 Magnum N frame, 4 inch barrel, with a shrouded ejector lug of the "standard" length. I dislike the term "half-lug," which seems to have only cropped up with S&W after the 581/586/681/686 were introduced, those models having "full lugs."

The story goes that New York State Police ordered them, and then cancelled the order, preferring instead to buy another S&W .357 Magnum model, the Model 28 Highway Patrolman, if I recall. S&W then sold the 520s on the commercial market in the two-piece blue box. The revolvers had Magna grips and standard hammers and triggers. I think there were about 3,000 made, give or take.

There aren't many and they aren't making any more. I can't say how much that gun is worth to you but to me, for $1100 it'd need to be NIB with papers and cleaning tool bag for me to buy it. That one is nice but not near NIB. Joe

If you click on the Search box about where the K-32 is pointing at the top of the home page and type model 520 in the Google search box on top, you should get several pages of posts (2,080).

The only thing I would add to Mr McCarver's post would be that the grips were P.C. magna's, not standard ones, and that they did not have numbers matching the guns, as was standard at that time. S&W also never printed the standard "papers" for this one, as it was a contract gun.

Should have bought that nib one I saw for $300. But that was in 1994.

This is the only S&W that was an instant collectors item. Most are unfired in original box. Unusual to find one that's actually been shot. Only N frame other than the 58 to come with the Modified Magnas.

I wouldn't pay $1,100 for that gun. It's one of the rare ones that's been used and the box is gone. It's a shooter at this point maybe worth $500 IMO. Bet a dollar it don't sell.

I've found this is one of the exceptions to the used gun rule - lightly used 520s tend to go for about 20% less than new, when they sell, probably to those who need to fill that hole in their N frame collection. Agree this one is a bit pricey at $1100.

I think this is the seller that has relisted this auction many times in an effort to sell that gun.
It would have sold already if priced correctly.
Go on GB and search ended auctions and you can see how many times he's listed it.
