Hi.... I was looking at a "Smith and Wesson Model 1500" made by Howa. There were No S&W markings anywhere on the metal, just in grip cap and recoil pad. I was wondering if this is indeed a Smith and Wesson, or an "ordinary" Howa in a Smith-marked stock.
Any comments appreciated. Thx

You said a S&W 1500
Is it marked that ?
If so it's one Howa made for S&W.

I picked one up this year in 7mm.
It happened to be NOS.
Didn't even realize it until I started mounting optics.

It even liked the first hanload tried.

This one is marked if it helps.
I'm not up on these and don't know the specs of what S&W called for in the contract.

The bolt was jeweled on this one and I think that was one of the items ?

Pretty sure that S&W never manufactured a bolt action rifle themselves, Howa made them and they were branded for S&W.

If it is helpful, Howa makes a damn good rifle! I’ve got two of them and if I were looking for another bolt gun, my own experience tells me that’s where I’d look first.

The Vanguard line of Weatherby rifles are made by Howa also.

Stocks, scope mounts and triggers are all widely available accessories for the Howa 1500.

Also some of the Howas had a recall.

Home Page

Howa is still performing the recall fixes. Just the bolt needs to be sent to Howa, not the entire rifle.

I picked up a S&W 1500 Deluxe by Howa a few years ago, in 30-06. The stock was so nice, I restocked it in a Hogue rubber over molded stock, saved the original. I liked the rifle so much that we have bought several Howa's since.

S&W 1500

I own 2 of them. On the left side of the barrel it should read ...made to S&W specs.

I have one in .223 Varmint with the bull barrel and no sights.
Bought new in 1982 and haven't fired it yet.
Still looking for the correct short bolt one piece mount.
I think the one pictured is a long bolt in short bolt packaging.

Mine is stamped with the Smith and Wesson name

The receiver is typically marked (I own seven S&W 1500s.), MODEL 1500 SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS. MFG IN JAPAN TO S&W SPEC. The barrel is only marked with the caliber, in this case, .223 REM.

Keep looking for the Redfield Remington 700 SA 1 piece base.
The short action screw hole spacing from the rear hole to front hole is approximately 5.375 inches whereas the long action spacing is 6 inches.
