Rare gun… 27-2, 6.5” barrel, Nickel finish

6 1/2" used to be a standard barrel length for Smith & Wesson in the 1950's to 1970's so that is pretty common. The nickel finish is uncommon. The letter does not say your revolver was 1 of 1 but it might be one of a few. Nice score.

I am partial to the 27-2 model and have several in all the barrel lengths, except the 6.5". At one of the recent Tulsa shows I found one but, alas, it was a 27 no dash with non relieved grips from 1961. A trade was made and I now have an almost complete set.

Dash it all!...

I would have taken bets that I have a 6 1/2" 27-2, but after a careful search of my safe I can only find this 27 no dash, and it's not even nickel...Now I have to rejoin the hunt...o_O...Ben

Nothing wrong with that

That's a nice looking 6" gun in the case. Yes, the 6.5" barrel was dropped in 1967 per the available barrel lengths listed in the S&W catalog. However, the factory still shipped 27-2 revolvers using the remaining 6.5" barrels into the early 70's. Here is an early 70's blue one I have. S/N N34396.

I have the simila config from early 70s (don't recall exact SN). 6.5 with matching magna stocks, but mine is with TT and TH (which is somewhat unusual - no TS but TH and TT)...They did use all spare parts for sure! :-)

It is the fourth from left to right. I had laid out the various barrel lengths (missing the 4" below) for a fellow member to see their looks. IMG_1869.jpeg

It has been awhile, but now I want a blue one: unless the nickel looks like those "one in a million" finishes of olden times. Great guns and thanks for the carrots. Good pictures can do that to a man that wanted one anyway.

Nice find Karl.......very envious.

The 27 was the first N frame gun I collected when I wandered past my initial J frame tendencies. I have a Pre 27 6.5" nickel and a 27 ND 6.5" but the 6.5" nickel is the only finish and barrel length missing from my set of 27-2. In my years long search for that gun, I have run into a few but the owners were not selling. Here is a picture of my 27-2 set, all barrel sizes and both finishes, minus the nickel 6.5". It is a hard to find gun.2- 27-2 all barrel and both finishes missing 6.5 N.webp1- 27-2 all barrel and both finishes missing 6.5 N.webp
