Looking for all info on a model 41. Which barrel length most desirable (collectable)? Early production vs. newer? Anything to help in purchase. May use in competition if one can be found. Thanks,Joe.

I would say a early production model with longer barrel that has not been drilled or taped..Smith started making them around 1960 and I believe better quality than the later ones and you would have some collector value.

No question the early guns command higher prices. Many will say they have better fit, function, and finish. I don't shoot competition so I don't know what you need.

i like the 5" bbl for myself. the 7" shows my shakes more. the 5" seems better balanced to me as well.

Our 41 is my wife's principal gun. We had a 5" gun and sold it about a year ago when she temporarily lost interest in shooting and wanted the funds for another project. Her interest rekindled recently and we just purchased a 7" 41. She tells me that she shoots the 7" more accurately than she did the 5 and I'll take her word for it (she's a fantastic shot, btw).

If you've never fired one of these, it is a pretty amazing experience. The trigger on the 41 is as light and crisp as any trigger I've ever handled. The gun is very, very accurate. My wife occasionally gets 1" groups offhand at 25 yards with it. She says that the 7" barrel is very easy to hold on target.

As for fit and finish, I find it hard to believe that the older models were any better than the ones we've owned. These are beautiful guns!

One thing else. The 7" and 5" barrels are interchangeable. For a bit under $300 you can buy a replacement barrel from Smith. We're planning to get a 5" barrel to complement the 7" barrel on our current 41.

Choosing Model 41 7" barrels

Have a Model 41 with a 5 1/2" barrel. I'm going to get red dot sights and I'm thinking that it might make sense to mount them on a 7" barrel.

What options are out there, besides S&W's own barrels? Since I'm adding the weight of the red dot, are there lighter weight barrels that are still accurate?

This might be fun! And make no mistake, the 5 1/2" barrel is still more accurate than I am.

Dunno. I can say the finish on my late model 41 is CRAPPY.

Joe

To Davidus: I have a 41 with two 5.5 inch barrels. One has a reddot and the other I shoot open sights. The reddot I use is a ultra dot match from larrys guns. I think it is larrysguns.com. It goes for about $200. It has adjustment for both size of dot and brightness of dot. I really like that product.
