Hi
New to forum. I have an old S&W model 10 that the hammer will not cock once cylinder has been closed.
Extracto rod and center pin , bolt , center pin, extractor spring , have been replaced ,
Any ideas??
I might be seeing it wrong but it appears that the "center pin" from the cylinder is not pushing the corresponding center pin in the recoil shield back far enough to clear the hammer travel. Try pushing the thumbpiece back fae as possiblewith the cylinder open and try to cock the hammer. Experts will be along any minute. Joe
How far is the center pin protruding from the extractor? (cylinder open) Can you provide a photo?
If the center pin is the correct length, then you will need to clearance the rear leg of the bolt to allow the tail of the hammer to pass by during cocking.
Use caution.....the action should not be cycled under full mainspring pressure with the sideplate off. The tension of the mainspring should be relieved, or the mainspring removed.
Jumping forward a bit, I see the likely need for a good Kroil soak of several parts.
I'll second the "do not cock/work action with mainspring at full tension". At a minimum, back off the mainspring screw until the mainspring is barely functional.
See if you can push the bolt further to the rear by pushing on the thumblatch on the left side. If so, it is probably gummed up by old oil and not going back far enough when pushed by the center pin.
