S&W model 10

I was in my LGS yesterday and they had a S&W model 10, in @80% condition with Pachmayr grips for $225 out the door. It functions well, at least as well as I can tell... I don't have a revolver and I'd like to get one.

The trigger felt terrific in both single and double, but the bore was filthy so i couldn't check the rifling....

Any comments on whether it is worth picking up at that price?

Better go back and get it. A feller without a revolver don't need to pass up a deuce-and-a-quarter Model 10.

Seriously, not a bad price for a great classic revolver. Try finding something new that even approaches that kind of quality for that price.

I'd just clean it up real good, give it a little TLC and leave it be.

I echo sheriffoconee's comment...I too love a good "roughed up" model 10. Their saddle wear is part of their character. If those ol' irons could talk, the stories they would share.

For a shooter, you would do well enough with a Birchwood Casey bluing kit.
With a professional re bluing you would have a lot of money invested.

OP, go back and get that gun!

Just throw the Pachy's in a box like myself and find some good wood. I like Ahrends the most right now. Altamont makes some decent laminate stuff. There are many more if you want to spend even more. I want a Retro Banana for my 625 next. Or maybe the smooth tactical...

I don't fix my "finish challenged" blue steel guns...I like 'em just the way they are...BUT, if I wanted one fixed factory is the first place I would send one to, I just don't want to put the money into a working gun....
if I need one to look nice, I buy one that way and TRY not to shoot it very often....usually without success

About six weeks ago I called S&W and asked the cost of refinishing a cosmetically challenged #36 SB I bought. I was told $200.00 for blue, $260.00 for nickel. I am buried in this thing, not sure I want to spend the money on it at this time.

Thanks for all the responses and input. I picked up the Model 10 last night, and after a little Balistol and a good "rub down", my opinion on the finish has improved quite a bit.

It's not a "NIB" example, but for being probably 40 years old, it looks and functions great! The grips that are on it have gotta go, but I am very pleased with my purchase. No pics as yet, but I'll get it out to the range this weekend (or sooner) and I'll give a report and post some pics...

Their is nothing wrong with a S&W revolver with some finish missing. They are good shooters that you don't have to worry about as much as nicer ones.

Please reconsider cold blue. To those of us that are devotees of the S&W revolver, the idea of cold bluing one of them is disgusting. Sort of like seeing an electric vehicle with an Obama sticker on it driven by a 300 pound chick going through the drive through at Colonel Sanders. Just makes me sorta queasy.

Its your gun for sure, but you did ask.

Thanks for your suggestion... I wasn't considering "refinishing" the old M10... After a good clean and polish, the finish is very good considering it's age. It has certainly been used, but definitely not abused! I've never tried the "cold blue" products, but the finish on this old S&W is so unique, that a "touch up" would, most surely, detract from it's appeal to me anyway.

Go to any motor cycle shop and see if they have any Flitz metal polish. I've used this on a few blued firearms that has some very small spots of rust and discoloration. It did remove some of the rust and also removed the discoloration. Rub on gently and let dry then remove with cotton cloth. Old t shirt works best. Try it on the spots that are covered with the grips to first get a feel how it works. Then if you are satisfied with it then do the whole revolver. I've a winchester 94 that I used it on and really made a difference in how it looked. Frank

For $225, that's a winner all right. The amount may seem like a lot,
but you can't find a deal like that very often. Your pics show a very
good-looking gun. I don't fit a k-frame at all well, but at that price,
(virtually nothing). you can't lose. That gun will make you proud for the rest of your life, and any heirs in the future. Good snag, happy shooting!

I gotta tell you, I was expecting a LOT worse for $220 bucks....there ain't a thing wrong with that M 10....clean it and shoot it...
Some LGS have a "big box o' grips" in the back for their odds and ends grip assortment, you can likely scrounge something else than the Goodyears, or find something online, or post what you want in the WTB section here.....

I think the gun looks fine as it is and you got a real bargain at that price. I wouldn't do anything to it.....it has "character" and re-bluing it won't enhance the value that much. Use it, shoot it, and enjoy it.

I honestly don't think that this stock is for a "K" frame. They are "on there" but I've got a set of "correct" grips on the way. Since there were millions of "K" frames made, that's a pretty lucrative aftermarket!

I couldn't put it to words but for some reason that stock is just fascinating to me. It reminds me of those older Bianchi stocks for K frames that shrouded the hammer. Odd looking but really functional. Yours have a single finger groove and a slight palm swell. I bet they are pretty functional for goodyears. They don't go all the way up but they don't stick out. So they aren't for an N frame. Many of the Taurus grip frames are only slightly different from their S&W brothers. It might have been made for a Taurus 82 and ended up on a S&W M10. Or it might have just shrunk funny with age. I like the screw locations though. Very different. If you ever decide you don't need them, I wouldn't mind a PM. Time to go fire up the grill!!! It's BBQ time. Just throwing that out there...

Nope, still running like a scalded dog, not bad for somebody born in 1948. It has become my favorite revolver, smooth action - like butter. I fixed me up a carry rig using an old Army web belt, a black Bucheimer holster and black double dump pouch. I carry it around the house on my off days. I consider it the best $275 I ever spent.

That Model 10 is a fine looking weapon. I would not do a thing to the finish. Carry it, enjoy it; a worry free companion. An excellent purchase. Do your best to shoot it until it wears out. Then pass it along to your family and tell them the same thing!
