My Dad is going to give me his model 14 when he passes. Hopefully that won't be for a great number of years. I do drool over having it someday though. I think he bought it around 1968. What can you guys tell me about the model 14?

A great target gun, usually with a 6 (more common) or 8 3/8" barrel, a six-shot .38 Special as you already know. We like photos! Hope this is helpful.

[sigh]

I passed on a pre-14 4 screw with decent finish at a gun show a few weeks ago. I thought he was asking too much at 375 OTD, but I really wanted it to match my 17.

I shoulda bought it. :(

I can tell you my Dad promised me his Light Twelve when he passed. He gave it to me before and I liked it more knowing he gave it to me. The Model 14 may offer a unique opportunity for you two to spend memorable times together, and you should remember that well after he gives it to you if he does.

The Model 14 is a wonderful handgun that was used by competition shooters back in the 50's, 60's and 70's and they have a reputation for accuracy. Hence the name K38 Target Masterpiece !!! They also made the Model 17 and they made it so that it weighed exactly the same as the Model 14 so that competition shooters and use the model 17 to practice with cheaper ammo.

AND they made a .32 version, Model 16, the K-32 Masterpiece. All three were weighted and balanced to match. Wonderful idea!
For me, the Model 14 (and its post-war ancestors) is the finest of the S&W revolvers, at least in .38 Special. I have several and plan to collect more before I leave this earth.
I could shoot one or more of mine every day and never get tired of it.
Have fun!

As an all-around, fun-to-shoot, accurate revolver you could not do better.

Anyone who enjoys shooting revolvers should have atleast one model 14 an model 17 in their battery of guns. Both my 17-3 an 14-3 have seen many thousands of rounds. I've lost count over the years, and probably have 20+ speedloaders for each. Any time I want to show up the young'uns at the range, I just drag out the 14 and put six in the X double action. Doesn't take long before I have several wanting to try her out. Neither gun has had an action job, just lots of firing, so both of them have butter smooth actions.
