I have a Model 16-4 with a 4" barrel. I purchased it many years ago. The gun is absolutely beautiful, however the previous owner removed the original grips and replaced them with rubber Hogue grips. It sits perfectly in my hand.

While an excellent shooter, it is time for me to sell it to another aficionado of the little beauties. No box or accoutrements; just the gun (almost as new).

Any ideas as to value? I would like to try the local market prior to using a national gun sales site.

Any input?

The 16-4s are very nice guns and not seen all that often. The original stocks should have been combats and those now go for several hundred dollars. I would guess your four inch as described without original stocks or box/papers would be worth about $800 where I shop. I bought the six inch below without box/papers for $850 several years ago. Good luck.

It is almost impossible to say what your local market is. As for a value, the general rule is to look at the completed sold auctions such as on Gunbroker. Anything else is just a guess.

I find that the 4" barrel brings a slight premium.

Been watching several sell on GB ranging from $1200 to $1500 with Combat Grips that should be original to your 16-4. Combat grips sell between $200 - $300 so take that in consideration. The 4" seems to be sought after more than 6" version. Hope this helps. Good Luck!

Thank you! Agree, however I have huge problems with Gunbroker. For some reason, it will not allow me to search "S&W Model 16-4" (or any variants of same). I am frustrated with that site.

Thanks for that, SFIDEC. Appreciate the look-up. This is good and helpful information.

That may be too restrictive. Try searching something similar like "Smith Wesson 16" in revolvers. It will be less restrictive and catch more results. To find what they actually sell for, you can also search only completed auctions using the advanced search function and sort by # of bids.

I usually go to Revolvers, then select Smith & Wesson, search for 16-4 and select 32 mag ammo. That should get you real close to current auctions.

These guns are a bit uncommon. Your Gunbroker problem may simply be that they have had no sales within the defined time period. Old auctions are deleted after so many days.
So where are you located? If anywhere near me, I'd be interested. As I'm sure many others would be too. You might even post a local sale ad in the For Sale forum here. ;)

EDIT: Ok, just did a quick check on GB. No closed auctions in their current history. There are two 4" 16-4s listed. One has no box but does have the correct grips. Starting price is $925. The other is LNIB with all the goodies. Starting price is $1299 with Buy now at $1399. Neither one has any bids, which doesn't surprise me any.
I'd guess that your gun would sell for around $800.

Not a common caliber in MT ,I am usually shooting the first one someone at the range has seen. I think it would sell here easily for $1000 and that is where people don't appreciate the cartridge. Most who would want to buy would flip it to a collector.

Yeah, I have to agree mtgianni. It does not say where you're at in the country, and I think that matters some, but here in PA it would probably go north of $900 even with no box and missing the stock grips. I've seen exactly two of them in the last 12 years while in my travels locally. One of them is in my safe now!
