Found one at a pawn shop today. 4" barrel. Wood grips. Target trigger, excellent condition and very clean. What's the difference between these no dash 28s and the 28-2? Are they better, worse?

I don't know that they are either "better" or "worse." Both are excellent revolvers.

The "no dash" has either a five or four screw frame. The -2 has a three screw frame. The fifth screw went away in about 1956; that is the one at the top of the sideplate.

The -2 has two main differences. One is the screw count because it lacks the cylinder stop plunger retaining screw at the front of the trigger guard. The other difference is the threads on the extractor rod. On the "no dash" the threads are right hand and on the -2 they are left hand threads. This change was made because of the propensity of the right hand threads to loosen upon repeated recoil, thus binding the cylinder.

Technically, the thread change came with the -1, but those guns are extremely rare. In fact, we know of only one that has been located. I believe it lives in Arizona.

Well for me.... it would not matter. Diamond service stocks, 4" bbl.... what's not to like. I wants it...

Great find...I am jealous.

Are the grips diamond? And are they targets or magnas? That can make a difference in value. In any case the correct grips would have the diamond center. If magnas they should have the guns serial stampted on the inside of the right grip pane. The 28 and 28-2 are both excellent. The 28-1 would be a 'write home about'.

They should be diamond Magna stocks. As far as I can determine, the norm for the HP was Magna stocks, not targets. Some certainly did ship with targets but I believe they were very much outnumbered by those that left the factory with Magna stocks.

I put it on layaway. I couldn't resist. I already have a 28-2 4" but why not a second one. You don't find too many of these too often.

The wood grips are not diamond, but they are S&W. They look like this. Pic for reference.

The stocks in your picture are N frame Magna stocks from 1968 or later. They are perfectly functional for your new revolver, but are not like those that came on it originally. Still, you found a great gun and should be happy to own it.

Just as a side note: Mod.28-1 is numbered S225243 61/2" shipped Aug. 8.1962 to Tryon Co. The letter and pics of the gun have been published on this Forum. Best

Your 28 could have shipped with stocks like this on order. My no dash from 1960. Congrats on your addition! Bob
