HI, New guy here. I have been a shooter for many years. I started with rifles and pistols, and then went the way of trapshooting. Time to go back to bullet shooting, as the eyes are not what they once were for moving targets. That said, i have been surfing some of the threads here relative to the S&W Model 29-5 classic DX. I have one, with the box, papers, warranty card, interchangable front sights, perfect combat grips, and the Hogue rubber grips, 5"bbl. I have the test target too dated 8/14/1992. Sorry, I do not have a pic, but it is in as new condition. I may have fired it once, but it is so long ago, I cannot remember. While searching through the forums I see somebody was looking for correct combat grips, and finally got some on ebay. I went to ebay, and found them as high as 375.00. Anyway, assuming the weapon is in the condition I represent it to be, anybody have an idea on the value? Again, sorry for no pic.......Thanks

I can only give you this somewhat irrelevant comparison. About four years ago, I paid $800 for a 5" 629-3 Classic DX in similar condition to yours. The SCoSW indicates that the 5" 629 Classic DX was only made for one year in the early '90s -1992 or 1993; if that's also the case for the 29-5 version (I'm too lazy to dig my book out), it might fetch as much as a grand these days.

You could go on auction sites like GunBroker.com and search the completed auctions to see what any that were sold recently brought. Beyond that, I'm not much help.

Now back to your trapshooting past. I, too, am a former competitive and now casual trapshooter. An eye problem (Post Vitreous Detachment) reduced my ability and once you've broken 200s and are on the 27, 16-yard scores in the low 90s are no fun. Accordingly, I'm back to rifles and handguns like you.

You know, the burnt powders smell quite similar.

Thanks for the info AveragEd. Yes the burnt powder does smell about the same, unless you are shooting Federal Paper. Nothing smells like them on a crisp morning. I lived in PA, and the gun in question was bought at The Walking Quail in Shippensburg. I imagine the gun to be 1992, because the test date on the target is 8/14/92. Never made 27, got to 26, and never made 200. 198 was the high. I will do the research you suggest. Thanks
