I went to a lgs in SoCal and they had a very clean, (said never been fired, very faint turn line) blued mod 36 no dash on consignment. They were asking 1200.00
I was a bit shocked by the price and didnt get a serial number. Kicked myself later. Oh well, it had the blue box and tools, some advertisments too. Very nice condition but that price seemed way steep.
So a few days later I go to another lgs and see a different mod 36, no dash sitting in the glass case, with a 1300.00 price tag on it. Blued and very clean but not as much as the previous. I didnt ask if it had a box and/or tools. I was just amazed I saw two of them in different locations and for around the same price. Am I missing something? Is this just because everything is more expensive in California? I know serial numbers would help...sorry.

Hard to offer an opinion without the s/n and a more thorough description or photos of the two Chiefs.

The price has been up on them most of this year. I've seen some crazy things.

Too high even for "buying too early"

My Model 36 no dash is about as pristine as they come, shipped January 1967 per Roy. Probably one of the last batch of no-dash to go out the door.

Got all the stuff with it to...matching number grips, box, docs, etc.

Have a current listed value of the package at $650. Maybe should be $700, but one listed locally not in same shape at all, no box or anything but the gun, listed at $899 and has been sitting for several months now so there you go.

Just bought a pristine 36 SB, no dash, docs, box, unopened tool kit for $600. To me, and I love J's, $700 would be the top end for me for a 36.

Serial # on one is J408xxx
So shipped '76-'77?

Model 36 no dash production dating

Hi JP@AK,

I am maybe (probably) wrong but when I looked at SCSW 4th, page 244 for my write-up on my Model 36 no dash (noted above) I saw where the no dash was replaced by the 36-1 in 1967 which lasted until the 36-2 in 1988.

I know that diamond grips were gone sometime in 1968, yet mine again...confirmed by Roy Jinks, shipped January 1967 and with non diamond Magna's.

Do you know if there is an error in SCSW 4th, or was there not made any 36-1 with other than a 3" HB? If ALL Model 36-1 ever made had only 3" HB, then the snubby 2" would be what you are saying in that the no dash went to 1988 with the 36-2. Correct??

Thanks for clearing up my mistake.

The diamond on J frame stocks was ordered to be eliminated on January 11, 1966. So a shipment in January, 1967, could well have had non-diamond stocks. However, existing supply of the diamond stocks wasn't exhausted, so in '67 and even '68, they could still show up.

The diamond on PC Magna stocks was ordered eliminated even earlier - October 11, 1965. But diamonds show up on later shipped guns.

Likewise, K and N target stocks were the subject of an elimination order issued on December 28, 1967. Those, too, show up on later shipped guns.
