S&W Model 4566

Yes. I carried one on the job from around 2000/2001 till I retired in 2015. I still carry one these days on my part-time jobs.

I have several to choose from, including two scarce Melonite examples. One of those is a salesmans sample, one of twenty five. But my old duty gun is probably my favorite and is my most carried example. It is stainless with spurless hammer and decock only.

They are accurate and bet your life reliable. In many thousands of rounds I have never experienced a failure. Ever. Zero.

Buy one. You will be glad you did. Regards 18DAI

Hundreds of people carried them at my department. With no issues. The only thing is you need to stay up on the recoil spring. The spring on the 4506 is overbuilt, so they last forever. But the 4566/63 doesn't have room for that, so the springs take a set after 2500 -3000 rounds, sooner if +p or such. If the spring has a 1/2" or more set it should be replaced. I don't remember the length( I had it marked on my bench). But other than that they are fine guns.

Anyone carry/use/shoot a Model 4566 ?

Opinions ?

Thanks,
Jimmy

I own and shoot one. I love it.
I need to replace the dead night sights, or get them relamped.
I just don't like the idea of having to send my slide off to have it done.

I carried mine these last two weeks on my daily trips around here. I carried it all over the northwest back in 2009-20011 when I lived there. I ccw mine in either a Ross IWB holster for a Sig 220 or an old Galco Combat Master. I have 1076 grips on mine which feel fantastic. I have two of these but my favorite is decock-only and has a tritium front sight only.

I'll second that. I never had a malfunction with my 669, 6906, or 3913 over the 25-odd years I carried one or the other. The only "problem" with any of them was intentional, when I had to do the pretend-malfunction drill during training. I know that reliability was the rule, not the exception, among everyone I know who carried any 2d or 3d Generation S&W semi-auto over the years. Amazingly reliable firearms!

Might be the best of the crop in mid-sized da/sa duty 45s. I actually prefer the 4566 to the venerated Sig 220. Heavy. Heavy duty. Accurate. And reliable with a wide variety of my **** reloads.

I own a few 4566TSW's and they are amazing guns. Every time I handle one it's an impressive experience. Both of mine have extremely tight slide-to-frame fits, and the actions are like glass. Slim, accurate, reliable, and despite the all-steel construction they carry very easily. A Desantis holster for the Springfield XD 45 that I accidentally purchased turned out to be a great fit for them (mine both have the rail attached).

I had a 4566 back in the ‘90’s. It was a great gun, very accurate except I has problems with the trigger play spring.

Yes they are VERY great pistols. I’ve mentioned it here before but the 4566 I got years ago was most likely a LE trade in. There was no trigger play spring with no sign of one ever being installed. (I did put one in and then replaced it with a new style one once I had a bunch.)

I’m pretty lucky cause it was $350.00 but “cosmetically challenged” on the outside but actually almost new inside. New grips and ScotchBrite helped and even the idiot scratch was gone.

I really the the Commander size and the 4566 fits that role perfectly.

Jim

So then 18DAI, were there ANY Non-Railed 4566TSW’s.?

Not that I’d EVER be interested in a Non-Railed 4566TSW. I’m only putting out this question for everyone’s interest, knowledge and benefit.

I’m not talking about the integral rail option, (s.)

Jim

Yes! There were rail free 4566TSWs made. For LE orders. No holes in the dustcover.

The Kentucky State Police order was rail free 4566TSWs. That order was never delivered - due to politics. You see them up on the big auction board every now and then. Just about as scarce as any other rail free TSW. ;) Regards 18DAI
