S&W Model 457

Who, What, Where ?
I would like information on this Model. A fellow has one in my area for $425.00 no box/[papers and only one magazine.

Black is the new stainless. <G> The 457 is a value line 4513 - alloy frame with carbon steel slide. 7+1 and will also accept an 8 round mag.

$425 is OK, but not a great price. I think it is Robertson Trading Post that always has a number of 457's listed on GB for $459. They don't move fast at that price, but they do move. I don't know how many mags they come with, but just one mag would offset the price difference.

It's a third-gen .45 auto. It was from S&W's "value line" which forego some cosmetics to bring pricing down. Accurate, reliable, easy to shoot, and with the 457 the alloy frame makes it fairly easy to carry.

The sights are plastic, and are an odd-ball size dovetail, so you can't just stuff in metal 3rd gen sights. Grips, mags, most inside parts, etc. are the same as a 4513. The gun will fit many holsters made for a Sig P229.

They make an excellent carry gun because of the fine combination of weight, capability, and above all price. I'd say $425 is a good price, depending on condition. I think the price is starting to climb slightly on these as people figure out they are a great value. I don't think they're going to skyrocket any time in the future either, but at $425 it would be hard to loose any money on it right from the start.

I have had one for a few years and love it. They're truly a hard gun to beat overall, and still sorta a sleeper.

There is a ton of information on this forum about the 457. The problem is that V Bulletin has a very weak search feature. If you type in "Smith and Wesson Model 457" in Google or any other search engine, there will be a ton of links right back here.

Great gun. I think the price being asked is high, though.

These are really underappreciated! Sportsmans Outdoor Super Store had a bunch of these come through last year as police trades that were really quite nice, at around $369, or so. I've had two of the black ones so far and keep asking myself why I ever parted with them. The last one I had shot much better that a couple higher end compact 45's that I took to the range with it.
I am extremely pleased to have recently found another one to join the herd. 457's are good, solid compact 45's - I think around $400 for a nice one (black) with one mag/no box is a good place to be.

Fine compact 45 for not too much money, used. More reliable and accurate with a better trigger - right out of the box - than currently manufactured compact 45's.

I got lucky last year and found one in a pawn shop for $300 tax incl. I carry it as a backup, and it is an excellent gun. Reliable and accurate. If I lost this one and had to pay $425 for another, I would do it.
