I am thinking of buying a S&W model 48 in .22 MRF that has a pinned front patridge front blade sight. I was wondering can a gunsmith replace the front sight with a more current style sight blade? Say one with an orange or white insert?

Why don't you just use some sight paint, and maintain the integrity and value of the gun?

The only value the gun has is how much I value it. My eyesight is such that a wider higher visibility orange suits me better. I don't collect I shoot what I buy and I keep what I buy for the most part. But thanks for the advice.

56 I too am visibly challenged but find I can see a patridge front sight better with a touch of orange testors than a factory ramp with the insert. Do what you wish but try the patridge before writing it off.

56, the short answer is yes, most likely can be changed. If it's pinned, it shouldn't be difficult or expensive. I'd call around or check the internet for what the going rate is. My local 'smith (TJ's Gunsmithing) gets $45-50.
